Brown Says New Clock Rule Prevented Comeback
AUSTIN, TX -- Add Texas coach Mack Brown to the list of critics of the NCAA's new football clock rules.
Brown said Monday during the weekly Big 12 teleconference that the new rules, which were designed to limit the time of games, hurt the No. 8 Longhorns in Saturday's loss to No. 1 Ohio State.
Under the rule changes, the clock starts on a kickoff when the ball is kicked, not when the receiving team touches it; and on a first down, when the ball is marked ready for play, not when it is snapped.
"One of the great things about college football is a team's ability to come back," Brown said. "Now that's limited. Our game was 22 minutes shorter. That's a little under 10 percent of our game. That's not fair to our fans. We worry about them sitting there?"

Fighting Irish Take Over No. 2 In Polls; Longhorns Drop to 8th
The Buckeyes were No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday, tightening their hold on the top spot the day after beating the defending champion Longhorns 24-7 in Austin, Texas.
Ohio State received 59 of a possible 65 first-place votes, up from 39 last week, and 1,614 points in the media poll. Notre Dame is back at No. 2 off its 41-17 rout of Penn State in South Bend. The Fighting Irish slipped two spots last week when Texas moved up to No. 2.
Notre Dame received three first-place votes. No. 3 Auburn got two first-place votes while Southern California, just one point behind the Tigers, had two first-place votes.
No. 5 West Virginia also received two first-place votes. LSU, which plays at Auburn on Saturday, is ranked sixth. No. 7 Florida also has a big Southeastern Conference game as the Gators visit No. 13 Tennessee.
No. 9 Florida State and Georgia rounded out the top 10.

Backup Punter Accused of Stabbing Starter
GREELEY, CO -- The University of Northern Colorado's reserve punter was arrested Tuesday, accused of stabbing his rival in his kicking leg.
Mitch Cozad, a sophomore from Wheatland, Wyo., allegedly attacked starting punter Rafael Mendoza in a parking lot in Evans on Monday night, Evans police Lt. Gary Kessler said.
Mendoza, the Bears' first-string punter from Thornton, was treated and released from the North Colorado Medical Center Monday night. Coach Scott Downing said Mendoza will not punt for UNC in Saturday's game at Texas State University.
"I don't know how long he'll be out because I haven't talked to the doctor," Downing said.
Cozad, Mendoza and freshman Zak Bigelow had been in a three-way race for the starting punter's job in preseason training. Mendoza has averaged 37.6 yards per punt on nine punts in the two games so far this season.
Cozad is facing second-degree assault charges and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a bond hearing. He was suspended from the team, evicted from his residence and expelled from school on Tuesday, The Greeley Tribune reported.

Iowa WR Calvin Davis Tears Achilles, Out For Season
DES MOINES, IA --Iowa wide receiver Calvin Davis is expected miss the rest of the season after tearing his right Achilles tendon.
Coach Kirk Ferentz said Thursday the injury occurred Wednesday in practice.
Davis, a fifth-year senior and starter, had just two receptions for the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes, who host rival Iowa State on Saturday.
Freshman Dominique Douglas and sophomore Andy Brodell should see more playing time in Davis' absence.
Tight end Scott Chandler leads the team with 10 catches and a pair of touchdowns through two games.

Oregon, Oklahoma May Provide Must-Watch Game Of The Week
EUGENE, OR --Oregon's Mike Bellotti isn't like most football coaches. He's not afraid to tell you what he thinks.
His 18th-ranked Ducks play host to No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday, and he knows what that means: The conference measuring stick is out again, and folks on the West Coast, even many of Oregon's rivals, are hoping it doesn't swat the Pac-10 on the rear once more.
Oklahoma, which dispatched Washington this past weekend 37-20, is one of four Big 12 underdogs squaring off with Pac-10 favorites this weekend. Arizona State is expected to roll at reeling Colorado, while Nebraska figures to be outmanned at USC and Washington State should take care of Baylor.
Oklahoma has beaten Oregon two years in a row. In 2004, the Sooners rolled 31-7 in Norman. In last season's Holiday Bowl, they upset Oregon 17-14.
The second major story line is the tailbacks. Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate, and Oregon's Jonathan Stewart share the same No. 28 jersey and are largely mirror images of each other: big, bruising, fast and ridiculously gifted.
"It's going to be a great matchup," Dixon said. "But Adrian Peterson has been doing it for a while."

I rarely poke my head into this part of the forum, and now I am starting to wonder why not. Pretty tight ship you guys run over here. Love the format of the posts.
I am really looking forward to Michigan State vs Notre Dame this coming weekend. Two blow-outs in a row will be having people saying "Brady who?" and "Wow look at that Stanton kid!"

Fighting Irish Drop To 12; Miami Becomes Unranked
Miami is out of the rankings for the first time since 1999, and Auburn is the new No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25.
The Hurricanes' latest lopsided loss -- a 31-7 debacle at Louisville -- ended a streak of 107 consecutive poll appearances that was the nation's longest current streak.
Not at the very top, though, as Ohio State remained No. 1 for the fourth straight week. The Buckeyes received 59 first-place votes from a panel of 65 media members.
Notre Dame's first loss of the season vacated a spot right behind Ohio State, and Auburn took advantage. The Fighting Irish fell to No. 12.
The Tigers, who beat LSU 7-3, have their highest ranking since tying for No. 2 with Oklahoma on Nov. 13, 2004. The Tigers received two first-place votes and are the third team to hold the second spot in the Top 25 this season, along with Notre Dame and Texas.
Southern California, which remained No. 2 in the USA Today coaches' poll, is No. 3 and West Virginia is up to No. 4. Both the Trojans and Mountaineers received two first-place votes. Florida is fifth, up two places after a 21-20 win at Tennessee.
Michigan moved up five spots to No. 6 after its 47-21 victory at Notre Dame, and the Fighting Irish fell 10 spots to No. 12. Texas is No. 7, and the Longhorns now have the longest current streak of poll appearances at 96, dating to Oct. 15, 2000.
Louisville moved up four spots to No. 8 after sending Miami to its first 1-2 start since 1997. The Hurricanes received 78 points, leaving them second behind Alabama among the others receiving votes.
Georgia was No. 9 and LSU slipped four spots to No. 10. No. 11 was Virginia Tech, followed by Notre Dame and Oregon, which jumped five spots after its wild 34-33 victory over Oklahoma.
No. 14 was Iowa and Tennessee dropped two spots to 15th. TCU moved up four spots to No. 16 after extending the nation's longest winning streak to 13 games.
Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 17 and Florida State fell nine spots to No. 18 after it lost 27-20 to Clemson. The Tigers' victory put them back in the rankings at No. 19.
Arizona State and Boston College were tied at No. 20. The final four were California, Nebraska, Penn State and Boise State. Nebraska was down four spots after a 28-10 loss at USC, and Boise State joined the rankings for the first time this season.
