The Devil did not MAKE the "Ghost Rider",.. he made JOHNNY the host for ZARATHOS, who is the ENEMY OF MEPHISTO. ZARATHOS is the name of the being that possessed Johnny and made him Ghost Rider.
ZARATHOS was a demon that grew in power and dared to rebel against Mephisto. Mephisto beat him, and would bond Zarathos to mortals, in a mockery of the Spirits of Vengeance who ZARATHOS corrupted while trying to gain power of HELL. The rulers of the Spirits of Vengence (called the Fallen) were rallied by Mephisto's son, whose name was Blackthorn. On one such occasion, he bonded Zarathos to Johnny Blaze, making him the Ghost Rider. Johnny would have to fight for control of himself, while ZARATHOS would seek to possess him.
There are bigger gripes to have than that...

I fully knew that there were going to be aspects of the actual ghost rider story that couldn't be translated into the first film...That's not my ball break...
My actual gripe, is that this is a flaming skeleton walking and riding a motorcycle...The average person...No, 96% of people I know would be doing ANYTHING else, than standing there shooting guns...
My gripe is piss poor dialog man, they made all this fuss about the contract, and all the rider had to do was hit him with the stare...
Recall the scene where the rider killed the wind demon or whatever...Man, they didn't just not explain anything, but explaining something would have been nice...
I put this right up there w/the George Clooney Batman...

Actually, there are three Ghost Rider stories, and three cross-overs or "prequels". And they did a good job of taking an even-handed approach to synthesizing them.

Perfectly in line with the fact most people in the comics who saw him thought he was WEARING a flaming skull, and it was when he came down on them with the Penance Stare that they freaked out because they saw it wasn't a mask or a helmet. Also, keep in mind there were quite a few people in the comics who never freaked out when they saw the Ghost Rider. Only the wicked have something to fear when gazing in the flames of Hellfire...

The Stare was how he tried to defeat him in the first place. It was ineffectual, until Blackthorn took the souls into himself. That's how it happened in the book, man.

That was an attempt to infuse more Hermetic thought and Occult philosophy into the backbone of the movie. It actually made perfect sense being that Johnny Blaze studied the occult. In fact in the comic he tried to summon the devil to save chick's dad, and Mephisto came up. So, to be honest, the whole Devil approach was more like what Johnny's percetion would have been like anyway. As far as the elements. The insensitive air of Intellect combusts when consumed by the Fire of the Will. Incidentally, The Air, Water, and Earth are conquered by Fire in occult thought.
In fact the Aish Tamid (Fires of Righteousness) are what consume the demons in hell, and the whole basis of the elements in this movie can be found in the Sepher Aish Metzareph, which is the classic Jewish tome on Elemental theory, according to similar precepts as those of Pythagoras.
For example, the wind demon you speak of, one of the Nepehlim according to the movie. Nephelim are "the fallen" and his body was as the wind. A creature of the air, thus impure emenations of the intellect.
The Rashith Ha-Galagim, or swirling of the Primal Fire at the dawn of Creation is what is used to dispatch them. Thus, this symbol is often used as a focal point for meditation, to help rid the mind of distraction. The symbol of Rashith Ha-Galgalim is the Svastika, Thor's Hammer, the Vedic Thunderbolt. So, natually he intiated a spiraling of his chain to consume the impure thought in the flames of Divine Will.
Keep in mind the Fires of Hell are not evil, they are the wrath of a defied God. Thus, HellFire is actually "Fire from God to punish the wicked."
so, let's just say, to me, the movie was Achemically correct, something I would be hard pressed to say about George Clooney's batman.
