Research shows us several things about reading (and together as a family)

the more children read and understand what they read the better readers they will become

the more we read stories and explain them the better readers they become

the more we have them read to us and explain what they are reading by answering questions on content the better readers they become

If you dont have a reading routine (our families is part of the getting ready for bedtime ritual)

Start just 5 min a day reading to your child

You dont have to read ALL the words on the page

Point out easy to recognize letters, numbers and words

Ask 1 or 2 questions about the story

Dont make it a chore for either (any of you) make it FUN

Enjoying to read is a big step for many

Me and my kid have been day in, day out daddy day care since he got here...

So, we do lots of things together, he's really kinda like my little roll dog...We read, watch movies and things like that, its amazing the things he takes in...

Usually he likes me to read comics, so I have a really big Superman comic called 'Peace on Earth' that I read to him...

No kids, but I started reading before most. Here is the trap of reading with and to your kid.

Don't read them drek. Reading skills are only as good as your ability to choose something GOOD to read or something of value. If you know how to make reading part of learning, and kids learn as you read with them, then they will not only have reading skills, but they will know how to use them.

Don't be afraid to give them difficult subjects. Don't be afraid to give them non-fiction. My second grade paper was on binary mathematics and genetic structure. Blew my teachers mind, when to be honest, its as simple a concept as "heads and tails" People thought it was hard, so it was: FOR THEM. They forgot to tell me, so it was never hard for me. To this day, the only difficulties I have in life are the things I was told were hard.

And nowadays, there is no way I would trust a teacher to make sure my kid learned, without knowing for sure by meeting with them often. Otherwise, I would fill my kid's mind to the brim myself.

drek??

Reading and Comprehension are also 2 different animals- Just because a child can read Shakespeare or Tolstoy or Quantam Physics at age 3 doesnt mean they comprehend it. Studies have shown if a child has to ask or look up too many words, definitions, etc. They are reading but not comprehending. One cannot happen without the other. You usually must roll before you crawl, crawl before you walk and walk before you run.

2nd grade paper?- like a thesis?? or a book report???

When my son was little, nothing kept him more entertained and satisfied than a good reading session together. We would read all sorts of stuff together from recently published childrens books to books from my childhood. I had no fears at the time for his reading development because he always showed an interest in learning. But after his mum and I split there was a fairly lengthy period where I could only see him a few times a year because we lived in separate towns, and his reading stimulus, apart from the books I would send to him, was provided mainly by his mum, who only ever reads repetetive, indulgent, self help crap with titles like "Finding Your Inner Child" etc. etc., and doesn't understand the importance of knowing about writers like Hemingway or Steinbeck or Kurt Vonnegut or Gabriel Garcia Marquez...to name but a few. And most of these authors should be easy for a teenager to comprehend. Hence his reading and writing skills are way behind where they should be. His writing is always in cyber language, (c u l8a)...sort of stuff, and I know his confidence lacks at certain times because of this, and I'm having real trouble trying to get him interested in reading now he's older because he believes he cant....I think it's of major importance for parents to take an active and encouraging role in the kids reading development. Show them that it isn't a chore to read, and provide access to a diverse range of reading material all the way through their childhood.

My paper was the written part of my science project. That's what it was called your "paper." it was different than a report, because a report did not have a physical project to go with it.

I heard the word "genetics" on Buck Rogers, and he was THE SHIT. Anything on Buck Rogers, I looked up.

...or Doctor Who?
