An estimated 374 people will be executed in China during this summer's Olympic games in Beijing, Amnesty International has claimed.
A new league table of the world's most frequent executioners showed China officially used capital punishment 470 times last year. But some campaigners believe the true figure may be 8,000.
The human rights group called on Olympic athletes and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to press for greater openness about executions by the host country.
Amnesty's UK director Kate Allen said: "As the world's biggest executioner, China gets the 'gold medal' for global executions.
"According to reliable estimates, on average China secretly executes around 22 prisoners every day - that's 374 people during the Olympic games.

I wonder how athletes feel about going over there...

Wow...I still can't believe that the Olympic Committee let the Games be in China. This is just one reason why China should not be allowed to host such a prestigious event - they are too inhumane!

:sarcasm: They do have a population of 1 billion+. If it were up to me, well figures wouldn't matter in the end... :twisted:trashtalkr wrote:Wow...I still can't believe that the Olympic Committee let the Games be in China. As a referendum(from the same date apparently):

China is not a world full of unique snowflakes. They are a world where overpopulation simply is seen as a bigger threat than violation of human rights against those who oppose your authority.
I am not saying it is more right or more wrong than what goes on in other countries, but no way am I going to be a hypocrite who acts like China is doing something unprecendented by human history.

Yeah, well I'm against the death penalty both here and in China. The thing about China, though, is that they are displacing thousands of citizens out of the cities because of the Olympics. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's been going on since before they got the Games. Communism just isn't good for citizens....

A very precise and rational viewpoint. I am in absolute agreement with this response (so much so I am somewhat jealous I couldn't take the time and effort to think of it first; it was on my mind, but ... procrastination... perfectionism... if i can't complete, why bother... yada... yada... yawn  )raum wrote:China is not a world full of unique snowflakes. The US executes people too. All Amnesty International ever says is how many people got executed officially. (470) Anyone can inflate an unsubstantiated estimate to 8000. Hell, why not make it 18000. What they don't tell you is how many were murderers, rapists, child pornographers, or other such convicted criminals. In a population of billions, 470 is not many. They want you to think China is pulling people from their homes and families simply for having independent thoughts. The propaganda is not to stop executions in China, but to get AI's name in the public eye because that is how they make money! $$$$$!
