Most corporations have security policies in place. Information Security would be on his back like flies on shit because Linux cannot be centrally controlled through Group Policy like Windows can. Then there's the part about using resources on Windows servers, but Linux does have AD integration through Likewise.

There are companies that use Windows proprietary apps but many that use only web apps, of which Linux should be fine for. I've had issues getting PeopleSoft to work properly on Chromium.

Then the guy talks about licensing and just shows his ignorance. When you buy a PC with Windows (OEM license), the license is included. You do not pay extra for it. There is Microsoft Volume Licensing but that's typically for companies larger than 10 computers.

I've already debated using Linux on my system at work. The thought of getting fired for using non-standard company operating systems on a production network is the bigger weight so I bear with Windows XP Pro.

I think what he was saying is that if you buy a Windows PC, with Windows software, you are more or less paying for it...

I don't think that most offices would have a major issue with the switch to be honest...I can only think of a few situations where that would be a big issue...

Maybe small businesses might. Any large corporation with a secure infrastructure and IT standards will most likely fire you. It's typically a part of the policies that HR departments make you sign.

I have worked for nothing but large corporations my entire IT career and none of them would approve of you just wiping your work computer and putting a Linux distro on them.
