I knew it was written in 1948, but I (and the English teacher & rest of the class) though George Orwell was just being a smart alec.

Not surprising since "George Orwell" is actually a pseudonym.

You guys might wanna checkout Anthony Burgess' 1985, written in 1978. It's in two parts, the first is an analysis of 1984, some of it critical and also quite clever, the second part is a more plausible dystopia, less imaginative than Orwell, but also less paranoid.

... and there is quite good movie adaptation with John Hurt and Richard Burton.

I've read it, it's good, but only when the book is going to finish
