Man... I tried unplugging that when my HD took a shit on me. I couldn't get it unplugged. I could never get a good grip on it.

have you recently upgraded any video drivers or had a Microsoft update applied recently? if you are running windows xp, look in the event logs (start->all programs->administrative tools->event viewer || (<-that means or) start->control panel->administrative tools->event viewer) to see if there are any errors being reported.

have you installed any new hardware recently? have you tried using system restore? (start->all programs->accessories->system tools->system restore Restore to an earlier point)

lastly, it may be a heat buildup (how many fans do you have in your case? are they all working and are the heatsinks dust free?) issue or my last guess would be a bad memory stick.

try some of these things and report back

I tend to doubt it'd be a heat buildup..
And I still don't think it's software either.

However, your final suggestion is quite a possibility - a bad memory stick. Kramer, could ya go into your BIOS (hit DEL on startup), then go under System Settings or General Settings or whatever it is, and find the option that is titled "Fast Memory Check". Set that to disabled, save settings, and restart.

Now, while booting up, you should see the memory checked counter go up slowly, instead of instantly. If you notice an issue from here, you might wanna go check one of the sticks.

But I still suggest booting of a CD and running Linux and see if that crashes, narrows down the issue.

WAI, I just tried to the BIOS suggestion... I hit delete on startup, but nothing happened. The wasn't a new screen, no menu, no delay whatsoever. It just loaded like it always does. I tried it three times.

I'm shutting it down right now to clean it with some compressed air.

I told emanon the other day that I don't grab many Windows updates anymore because when SP2 camew out it fucked up my scanner. lol

The most recent hardware that I've installed was my DVD burner, and that was about a month ago.

Does it happen by any chance when you're using Firefox? It's been happening to me. I just deal with it though. Haven't tested it with IE yet, so I don't know if it's just Firefox or whenever I use the Internet intensively.

I don't think it would be FF because it did freeze once when I was asleep, so the FF wouldn't have been open.

Could be F2 or F12 on some BIOSes, check you manual..
I STILL suggest trying that bootable Linux CD - narrows it down..

providing the bios he doesnt quite know how to get into is configured to boot from cdrom before hard drive

Well, by default they're designed to boot from CD..
So, if I assume he's never touched the BIOS, it should boot up ok, lol

Yeah, so, my computer is freezing again, and I don't know why. It seems to be getting worse because when I woke up at 9 AM today it was frozen, and I just got home now (3 PM) and it was frozen again.

My HD is not even 2 weeks old. I'm only using 10.6 GB of the HD. I've done several scans and nothing has come up...
