What shellpower said sounds pretty good. You can get some pretty damn good CPU's for a grand
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

QUOTE(raum)look for open items at best buy, and work from there... if she already has a monitor, she has saved a bit right there.

im also presuming her stack is supposed to include taxes.  other than that, newegg is alwahys good for some stuff, or a decent ebay run could get something.

don't get a pentium 4

What's wrong with P4?

She should be able to get something good... I paid about $1,600 for my desktop, and that includes the printer/scanner/copier, wireless adapter, and my 2 year warranty.

P.S. DAAYUM!!!

P.S.S. Kidding... lol

QUOTE(ruffriders23)I know I wouldn't get a Dell... no matter what else is done, I would stay very clear from them. The CEO has them turned backwards and nobody knows up from down. They have had some recent struggles, that's true. But their manufacturing approach still kicks ass. I am also impressed with the way they are handling the battery recall... even though the likelihood of battery malfunction is very remote ( there have only been six reported incidents of batteries overheating and causing damage to property or personal effects) Dell is taking immediate action to recall and replace all potentially affected batteries. (Batteries manufactured by Sony, I might add). This focus on putting the customer first is a return to the Dell of old (IMHO) and a sign of good things to come from them.

Dell's biggest problem was the failure of HP to remain competative for so long. It's easy to be complacent and sloppy when the competition appears to have left the building. Now that HP is making a legit turn around, expect Dell to do the same.

Dude....there's nothing wrong with Dell.

I have owned nothing but Dell for the last 10 years and can honestly say that I have had minimal problems with their hardware.

Let me see what I can get with our discount A!

Dell has been on the downswing ever since they went to internet/catalog ordering. When they sold strickly to companies and individuals via sales reps, they were alot better off. Same thing happened to Gateway. The company may have a good sector or 2, but as a whole I would be real careful buying anything from them.

As for my computer, I got min free from the VA, but it would have cost like $1,400. It's an E-Machine which I didn't want, but the AMD 3400+ processor with XP Media Center is not too bad. I added some RAM (it's at 2.5 GB now) and some programs from here and other places and it runs pretty nice now. It also came with a scanner/printer/copier and a digital camera.

I would have rather built my own for about $500 less and had it be about 50% better. But, hey, it was free.

I would go with the BIOSTAR TForce590SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard from Chiefvalue.com = $197.

Then add on the Hanns†™¢¢¬…¡¢‚¬Å¡‚·G HW-191DPB Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor W/built in speakers = $171.99 also from chiefvalue.com.

Maybe max out the RAM, and you are off to a good start.

I come to you (the person reading this post) and hand you $1,000.00 USD and say I am a gamer and college student...I want you to build me a computer, and I will need a detailed list of the parts you put into it, and what it costs...

I want you (the person reading this post) who knows a bit about gaming and shopping on a budget, to take your great knowledge and put together a complete system, and post it here...
