I use System Mechanic and Ccleaner... but I want to check out O&O.

I use the command line utility from Sysinternals.com called contig.exe; easy to script, can do the whole HD or just certain directories (why keep defragging the same folders over and over and over when they don't really change between defrags). I'll dig up a link to this free utility if you are still looking for a solution and are not afraid of having to type a command at a dos prompt vs pointing and clicking on buttons.

I know you can do the a defrag through DOS by going to your C drive and typing in "defrag c: -b"

correct, but defrag.exe and defragntfs.exe both require a drive as an argument. Contig is different because you can specify a subdirectory as the root of your defrag and work (recursively or not) from there. You can also specify a single file for defragging which is an option I dont typically use but have in the past, for example when downloading a multipart rar file that I have joined together, the resulting extracted file is usually fragmented like a mofo

I am a little anal about the computer... I defrag and clean like every day. But, thats also because I am on the computer all day long, so the files become fragmented and cluttered with all my use. I would like something simple and indepth to use if it is better than the CCleaner and System Mechanic that I use now.

I downloaded and used the O&O that AYHJA talked about. That thing is off the hook!!! I want a crack for that bad boy next. What about it?

All these programs that you guys have mentioned.... could I use them with my external hard drive?

If not, are there other programs that I could use that would be better than Windows for my external HD?

I don't see why not. An external is only different from an internal in the fact that it is outside of the case instead of being inside. Right?

Yeah man, I really like O and O...But you should by all means be able to defragment an external drive as easily as an internal...

What version of O and O do you have ruff..?
