Soccer is athletic becuase I have watched 5 minutes of it and they were running and dodging Mo' Fo's like a Mexican running to the border.

Golf is a great game, but walking 5 miles now constitutes athletic? Shit, every old fart in my neighborhood is an athlete when they walk with their cane at night then. The damn caddy carries the clubs. All the golfer does is walk up to the tee/field of play and hits the stationary ball. How damn athletic is that?

Is Golf hard from the standpoint of mental ability. Yes, it is a game of mentality. It takes great thinking and knowledge of the course to win at golf. But, swinging a club at a stationary target while your caddy carries the heavy ass clubs the 5 miles doesn't get me all excited to call you an athlete. I would say the caddy has to be in better shape than the golfer.

I'm gonna say that golf is a sport because it requires skills that you would not normally have. Sure, you can practice and soon hit a ball 400 yards, but you can also practice and throw a 95 mph fastball. As Ty said, you have to brave some elements. Golf is not as easy as it looks to be real good at. Sure, it's the most popular rich and retired man game but most people play it as just a game, but it is a sport to those who make a living off of it

I agree that golf is not easy. Trust me, I have been to the driving range and found that I was best at lobbing the balls over the net trying to hit cars and people running. Thats when the kicked me off the range. But, a sport is a game that not everyone can do, even with practice.

Could I practice and make the PGA tour? Sure. Could I be as good as Tiger? No. Thats why there are winners and losers... someone is better at everything. Throwing a 95 MPH fastball takes alot more energy than swinging a club up to 4-5 times a hole. 1 swing, 5-10 minute break, then another swing. In baseball you get maybe 30-45 seconds between pitches most of the time.

Golf will never be an athletic sport in my book. And, Tiger will never be one of the greatest athletes either. He will be the greatest golfer ever, just as Bobby Fisher will be the best chess player ever.

ruff...While I can sincerely hope that you can find a way to become a good consisent contributor, as of right now, I don't see that happening...I am extremely patient, but you're even pushing me into the red zone...And suffice to say that when that happens, it is never ever a good thing if you want to remain active on this forum...

For instance...

In this thread, it is already said that an athlete is a person that plays a sport...And that a sport or a game is an activity of leisure...You seemed to ignore that, ok, on to the next thing...

You rattle off little things like "If you practice golf, you'll get good at it"...Even insisting that you can make the PGA tour...I...Seriously doubt that shit ruff, and I may be hating on you, but I just doubt it...I can say with 99.9% certainty that if you seriously took up golf, you'd NEVER make it to the PGA...Ever...I doubt even, you could play LPGA golf...

Your logic man...Its the logic of shit you say that has people dizzy around this bitch...

Throwing a 95 MPH fastball takes alot more energy than swinging a club up to 4-5 times a hole

I am assuming you have never done either...Making your frame of reference 100% bogus...But here's your logic...

Essentially, if you PRACTICE throwing a 95 MPH fastball you could eventually do it...

I think I'll practice my pitching, and go close games for the fucking White Sox...Come on man, you're too old to be saying shit like that...I argued this shit w/LG, and he's 11 years younger than you...Not to bring up the age shit, but for crying out loud man...

And then to add insult to injury:

QUOTE(ruffriders23)I've never played a round of golf myself.

In this thread: http://www.ayhja.com/af/viewtopic.php?p=142195#142195

Unbelieveable...You're on your own at this point man...

I agree with AYHJA. All you do is come online and spew out bullshit. You never provide anything to back up your claims. You just keep giving your opinion... over and over and over... If you're going to come on here and say that Kobe is selfish or that golf isn't a sport, you better be prepared to back up those claims. VU isn't the only board we take shit seriously in.

QUOTE(ruffriders23)Ok, Is Golf a sport or a game?

I contend that Golf is a leisure activity and not a sport for athletes. All last week I heard about Tiger Woods and weather or not he was among the greatest athletes of all time. Golf is a challenging game to be sure, but not unlike any other mind challenging game, Chess as an example.

Golf does take a certain amount of movement, but no matter what your body type is, you can play the game. Fat, old, young, skinny, it doesn’t matter. Any thoughts?

ANY activity of ANY kind can be a leisure activity- leisure is basically something you do for fun, unpaid, during times of not working. For example, posting on a forum & SCUBA diving is leisure, but moderating a forum and scraping barnacles of the keel of a ship is work (even if you enjoy them).

Golf may seem relatively effortless compared to chess or rugby league, but it is still a sport. It takes very good hand-eye coordination, judgement of distance, and control of swing strength to succeed well. It's similar to duck-shooting, you have to be able to aim well, etc. Those skills is what makes golf a sport.

Just because a sport doesn't require certain physical attributes, does not discredit it for being a legitimate sport.

Sorry, my bad. I thought this was a forum where I could bring in an opinion and discuss it. I didn't realize I had to copy and paste an article written by ESPN.com and then walk away. That†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬‚¢¢¢¬…¾

‚¢s not a sports take, that plagiarism.

What I tried to do was ask a question and then talk about it. Won't happen again.

Golf = Sport

Golf is a sport in the same way Zero is a number.

Remember, Golf was classified as being a sport, when sport meant "pleasant passtime", before that it was played by ruffians, along roads, where drunken scots would try to lob a rock into an open window along the road back home from the pub, by hitting it with a stick.

but Golf is certainly a sport.

But Golf isn't a sport..

reason's why.

You compete against the par for course, not the other players on the green.
You can buy in at a tourney. Could you see if a baller wanted to buy into a Laker's game?
You can play on professional greens without being a pro. WHILE THEY PLAY.

Golf requires no physical conditioning that you do not require of yourself. That is why Tiger stands out, what he requires of himself is excellence beyond the capacity of most golfers. But to excel at golf requires EXTREME physical conditioning. Far beyond most team sports... because you must be able to develop intricate levels of body memory, and the control of every muscle from your calf to your forearm.

At most, in modern terms, Golf is a non-agressive sporting game. That being said, most of the people who think they can play 18 holes and not feel in the next day are usually in for a shock.

but it is not as much like Chess as it is like Croquet. Chess doesn't require muscle control, body-memory movements, nor is their equipment advantages in chess. chess is a strategy board game.
