I actually think it's kind of interesting. I mean, back in the day men used to play the parts of women in plays. How is this any different?
It's not like they're re-writing history. They're not making this girl a white chick now... They've made Jolie's skin dark.

Kramer, the easiest reason for this is simple.
Halle Berry would be no better choice than Angelina Jolie simply because she is black. both are accomplished actresses with demanding roles, but neither is in danger of not finding work and I am kind of tired of seeing the same three women in movies. but i think you are missing the point.
QUOTEFilming began this week in India. Pakistan was rejected as a location because of security fears. It is being made by Brad Pitt's production company Plan B, with him as producer and Briton Michael Winterbottom directing.
Jennifer Aniston was originally lined up to play the lead, already tipped by industry insiders as a potential Oscar contender. But following her divorce from Pitt, in which she relinquished part ownership of Plan B, he handed it to his new flame Jolie.
so, essentially, this is self-grandizing bullshit coming out of hollywood, again. no actresses were auditioned.
the reason I don't like the idea of Angelina in the part is because she is wearing black face, not because she isn't black. If Angelina were playing the same part, and not in black face, I'd feel a little better about it. It's WHY do they feel compelled to portray the BLACK woman in the story, but not identify her as a BLACK woman on the screen.
and the reason is simple. Brad Pitt is producing the film, and originally, the part was going to be played by Jennifer Anniston (which would have been laughable).
the story would be the same if the WHITE actress playing were not wearing BLACK face, and ironically Angelina's make-up is darker than the Pearl's skin, who is of mixed parentage.
Now let's compare Halle Berry, then, who is a FINE actress. Her new movie is "Class Act" and it is based on a true story. a true story in which she portrays a WHITE woman who is convinced to run for public office by her students, who put together her campaign. and she isn't wearing WHITE FACE.
rumour has it, she is not f#ckin the producer...

Ok, I can understand your gripe about why Jolie got the part. That is a little ridiculous...
I'm not sure I get your point about not wanting Jolie to wear the black face, though... It wasn't long ago that you posted an article about World Trade Center and how a black character was being portrayed by a white actor because no one knew he was black...

Jolie playing the part is one thing. - that is ok, even if she is not 1/2 black.
Jolie playing a part intended for her man's onld girlfriend is another.
but the notion of Jolie playing the part in blackface somehow indicates they wanted a black woman on the screen, and that is not true... there were no serious auditions for the part,.. this was a part written for the producers girlfriend, regardless of the story.
how would you feel if Brad pitt wanted to make a movie about the Rape of Nan King, and it starred Angelina Jolie, and the whole movie she was squinting to try and look asian? It makes no difference to the story if she is Asian, White, Black, or anything. Nan King still happened and so did the death of Mrs. Pearl's husband. both are horrible events, and detracting from the story by focusing on the color of her skin, essnentially as a "prop" was a bad choice.
and it would be a good idea for a dramatic movie, and i would rather see someone a little less show-stopping famous in the part who fits the bill of a fiery woman who is trying to get her husband back from terrorists, that he was trying to expose... and not drawing attention to the fact she is A. not black enough, and B. extremely famous.
as far as the soldier, I was giving him props,.. and at the same time adressing the idea that the hero is still white washed in the minds of hollywood, if nowhere else. the white skin is still the shining armour. at most you can see a black "anti-hero", which admittedly is the preferred protagonist in most modern action movies, regardless of race.
