I'm not from California but I too love the Farmer's Market! California is just a hop skip and a jump from here, and it is the best place to vacation besides Vegas. I have friends and family in Cali. so visits are fairly frequent.
I try to support the local restaurants to find the best food! For my regular shopping I detest Sprawlmart, however I am a cheap ass, so I usually try to go there late at night, so i don't have to bother with all the damn people. Its like going to the damn carnival, with all the freakshows there. The other thing about Wallyworld is it always looks like a damn tornado hit every aisle...shit strewn all about.
We've got a great local grocer here that is fairly large in our market but does a great job.
Do you buy local..?

The Farmers markets are the best but for goodness sake wash that food before you eat them veggies and such... they dont supply port-a-pots to the illegals working the farm
Sprawlmart (havta remember that)- I love it- I'm also a cheapass miserly bastard (ask my kids they'll confirm it)
Local restaurants and mom & pop shops are the best- while in the Military some of the greasy spoons had the best food
Butcher?? I buy the big half cow and pork from the grocer and do it myself, cook it up and vacuseal then freeze it.

I live in an Aussie coastal town where there is a mix of well moneyed people, and a hell of a lot of unemployed, so there are tons of bargain chain stores like "Crazy Clarks" etc. that sell all sorts of crap for a fraction of the price of quality goods. And for the people with money the choice isn't much better. The majority of shops and stores are owned by major retail chains. They've got everything covered from whitegoods to clothing to food to CDs. Woolworths bought a couple of BP petrol stations, so if you spend $30 or more on your groceries you can get 4 cents a litre off your fuel, and so we all take up the offer because petrol's so expensive here (usually around $1.30 a litre)......They even bought out one of our local pubs!! Coles kicked up a stink about the local hobby farmers who sell $2 bags of their home grown bananas to people passing by (their neighbours usually) and pressured council to ban them. Small businesses and family run places open and close like nothing else because they are always outpriced by the giants...they've got us all by the balls around here. So it's pretty impossible to shop local because you never know who really owns what. I do wherever I can though...

I buy local as much as I can. Also I love those old wooden-floored musty-smelling shops. Reminds me when my grandmother used to take my sister and I to Yinfoo's Store to get icecreams out the back, and triple-wafer biccies & Scotch Fingers for my granddad's smoko up at the farm.
