I've also got a friend who was married to one of the US's last polio victims. Totally paralyzed from waist down. Of course he had a handicap tag on his van. Oftentimes, she would drive them to the mall in the van (dual controls), drop him off at the entrance and then go park. You can imagine some of the comments she got, and she was almost ticketed a couple of times.

Sorry A, just because you might be sitting doesn't make things easier. I've spent over 15 years working with the disabled and it bothers me that we're still in this mindset.

Uber, I agree with Deepdiver, just because they are in a chair doesn't mean they are anywhere near as mobile as you and I. Although, I do think that your doctor should be able to issue short term parking tags (3-7 days) for minor injuries like twisted ankles and knee operations. By the time the system gets you a parking tag, you wouldn't need it any more for some injuries. But, to walk through an entire zip code from your parking spot to the store on crutches totally sucks!
