I hate it.
I was getting on really well with my sister this afternoon, then during dinner an argument blew up. I was cooking some stir-fry and said, because of the argument, she couldn't have any (she offered me some of her soup, which I didn't want to touch). Anyway large parts of the story are being left out, but she got really worked up then got on the phone with my parents and bawled her eyes out about something else (she was probably worked up about that anyway). Now she's furious with me, and won't let me explain anything, 'cause I'm on the silent treatment.
She's threatening me to kick me out of the house (the lease is in her name), if I don't get the washing up done before she's up.
I hate this, especially when she makes me out to be the bad guy to our parents and that she's good. It's really pathetic.

Your sister has issues! If she's giving you the silent treatment then just give it back. Eventually she'll get so mad at you for not gravling (sp?) that she'll break and start yelling again and then you can have your conversation.

Sometimes the silent treatment gives people time to blow off steam...
Example: I was helping this woman who had suffered from lead poisoning when she was a little girl and had left her with a mild form of mental retardation.
She had a bad habit of getting so mad at things and events that her caseworker at the time told me to just don't speak to her for a couple of days until she calms down.
Sure enough, about a week or so later, she call me up and had totally forgot about why she was mad.
Unfortunately, she died last year the day after Thanksgiving. But whenever she would fuss and fume about anything, I would leave her alone for awhile and she calm down.
