Big Unit Wins 300th

Image

Randy Johnson has earned his 300th win, becoming the 24th major league pitcher to reach the milestone.

The Big Unit allowed two hits and an unearned run over six innings Thursday, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals in the first game of a doubleheader.

With his teenage son serving as a Giants batboy, Johnson (5-4) struck out two and walked two in his first attempt at No. 300. The left-hander got his 299th victory last week against Atlanta.

At 45, Johnson becomes the second-oldest pitcher to reach the milestone. Knuckleballer Phil Niekro was 46 when he won his 300th game with the New York Yankees in 1985.

Congrats to Randy Johnson on this incredible feat. I have seen him pitch several times when he was with the Mariners and love watch him dominate this game. I honestly don't think we'll have another 300 game winner for a very, very long time if ever.

Yeah definitely the last one of probably our lifetimes. CC is the next most likely I geuss if he hits 18 wins a year from now until 2020 but I wouldn't count on it.

Yeah I wouldn't count on that either, especially since he's never won 18 in a season yet

I'm not a big baseball fan by any means...but even I think the officiating has gotten out of control..

I just don't understand why they are unwilling to use instant replay when they could make sure they get the call right. I don't think balls and strikes should be questioned using IR, but why not be able to check out fair/foul homeruns or tough plays in the field?

You know, I really wish there was instant replay for certain things, but do you know how friggin long the game would be with instant replay? They're long enough as is. I kind of also appreciate baseball staying old school.

People make that argument...but I don't really understand why.

It's not like they'd have to review every single play and verify that the correct call was made....but there could be an ump or someone in the booth who is looking at the plays and has the power to stop and review something if it looks like the wrong call was made.

I don't really remember football before challenges...but it doesn't seem like to me that they make the game that much longer..

And I don't really watch baseball, so I can't truly understand how long the games are as is.....but in fairness to the players...I don't see why they're sticking with a clearly inferior and unfair system when they could just as easily make sure they attempt to correct some of these mistakes.

Not to mention....and again, I'm not a big baseball guy....but how often do these blunders really happen? Twice a game at the most? Probably not even that many...but fixing two errors a game couldn't really take up that much time, could it?

I guess it kinda varies, I mean, they play SO MANY GAMES in baseball, one bad call isn't going to ruin your season like it would say, a call in a football game...There's so much more on the line in games for other sports...I like baseball, but only in October...Well, if you can catch a game live, its awesome, but I just can't get amped for a game that's going to be meaningless...Some of those stadiums are so empty sometimes...

I would end up digging my own eyes out if they added replay to baseball and made the game even longer...Plus, there's nothing like watching a manager loose his lid on an ump for a bad call, you'd take away too much of what's good about baseball w/replay IMO...
