Play like something else? Not exactly...but offer something new and different. Shooters should advance over time, as most shooters actually have. If one game has something groundbreaking then you should do one better. It changes things and keeps them fresh, which this game unfortunately is not.
I will say that I played a bit more of it but still left unimpressed. I did finally see some decent looking graphics on the level with the missile being launched. Maybe it's the lighting in the game? Who knows.
What just irritates me to no end is the sound effects. It doesn't matter what gun I try in the game. None of them sound realistic or have any sort of impact. Heck, even the heavier guns like the M60 or RPK all sound like BB guns. From a hardcore FPS gamer's perspective the game lacks a lot of polish even though it has high profile voice actors (Sam Worthington, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman) and a crap load of advertising.
I just found out that the game broke Modern Warfare 2's launch record. That's what marketing can do for you. You can make an average product and sell a lot of it with proper advertising.

I will agree that the sound of the guns is quite pathetic. It's not something I particularly care about, but for someone who does..I can totally see why BO is a disappointment in that department.

Call of duty is a arcady twitch based shooter. Its seems wrong to say a game needs to be realistic when you have money raining down when you kill someone.

I played the original Call of Duty and the expansion (United Offensive)
extensively. I also played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
extensively. I am aware of the game type. Heck, even Call of Duty 4 had better sounding weapons. Unfortunately it was Treyarch that made this one. Infinity Ward made Call of Duty 4 and the originals.
Treyarch doesn't specialize in FPS shooter games. They have primarily made sports games and Spider-Man games. It shows quite a bit.
The
least that Activision could ensure is that the guns don't sound pathetic. :curse:
Anyway, back to Call of Duty 4, there were two modes: normal and hardcore. Hardcore dominates the server selection now. You probably won't find any normal mode last time I looked. Hardcore was pretty much one shot kills and EXTREMELY difficult and challenging. That is as close to real as it gets and the gaming community drifted to that with a Call of Duty game. I would get 2:1 and even 3:1 kill ratios in hardcore mode all the time, not even camping either. Check out the screenshots below. My gaming name is
12 Gauge Shotty.

Oh, this sums up Black Ops as well.

^ lol so damn true. I was watching my friend play BO in the campaign when I first got to his place...and there was about a 3:1 cutscene to actual action ratio.

Yeah, I became quite bored of everything even beyond my dislikes of the audio and graphics. One of the few games I have rented that I actually wanted to return.

I have not ever been a fan of the FPS, but for the longest, my ass was very into Battlefield on the PC...I could play it now...I'm not sure which of the games today translate to that kind of fun, but I don't think I want to play it on a console either...

Let me bump this by saying that I've been playing Black Ops on PS3 every chance I get, and I quite like it...I don't have a multiplayer experience to compare it to though...I've seen the new Battlefield trailer and it looks like its going to wipe the floor with CoD...
I just got CoD on PC today, gonna see how much fun that is...
