He has proven he can coach on the professional level, therefore I know he has the experience to succeed. He is brining postive attention to the organization, that which Willingham never did. He has already recruited great talent for the upcoming season so I have no doubt he'll only improve and build this dynasty. Willingham right now only has 1 win. If you remove them from ND's schedule, it makes their oppennets record much less horrible. I mean..among other things..how is that not the judge? So he started good with a team taht was already in place...where is he right now? On the bottom of the Pac 10 with only a single win. Weis's finishing record, in my speculation, will be the same of Willingham's however, they're ranked in the top 10, and will play in a much higher bowl game.

Not to mention the fans love him. People turn on the TV now to watch ND not only to watch the college boys, but to see how Weis would fare (maybe more towards the beginning of the season, but regardless)

You don't understand that the phones at ND are ringing off the hook from fans and former players and students who love this guy and want to keep him around. Not to mention he graduated from ND, and has said he plans to retire from there. He is in it for the long run, and there is no reason why he shouldn't be.

Also, when Willingham was coaching, the standard extension was 5 years...anything exceeding was unheard of for a fairly new coach, and that is what Willingham got. He never reached the point where he would be given another extension, but either way, if Weis was around when Willingham was, he wouldn't have recieved an extension either. Although the record isn't as good as it was at this point in the season, ND has never been as feared, the team has never been as confident, the nation hasn't been following as closely as they are, and they haven't been ranked in the top 10 in the last five years.

Things are going good and you get a great feeling when watching ND...the feeling that they're headed for greatness, and Weis, although unproven as of right now, is the man to take them there.

Fair enough response, although the only detraction you can make for Willingham is this:

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)He is brining postive attention to the organization, that which Willingham never did.

While that can be argued, it surely can't be said that he bought any NEGATIVE attention to the program, especially seeing that he had Notre Dame among the TOP in graduating student atheletes...

Also...Please tell me you feel that the fans and such felt any differently, when in his first year, Willingham was undefeated...Weiss has lost 2 games...

No...in his first 8 games he was undefeated....he lost all the rest of the games....

We all know its more about how you finish then how you start.

How many times has a team gone undefeated in the beginning....then completely crumble?

He did that not only with the rest of that 8-0 season.....but also with the rest of his coaching tenure there.

Fact of the matter is.....when Willingham was coach....I never even though about turning on the ND game...or discussing them....but now that Weis is there....they're front page news...everyones watching, everyone's interested.

Weis is bringing fans man...its the truth.

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)No...in his first 8 games he was undefeated....he lost all the rest of the games....

Nope, wrong again...They finished the season in the Gator Bowl, at 10-2...The most impressive start for a first year head coach in the HISTORY of the program...

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)We all know its more about how you finish then how you start.

NO FUCKING SHIT..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The season isn't over, Nary an impressive win, and a 10 million dollar extension....Still waiting to hear logic on the justification of the extension...

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)How many times has a team gone undefeated in the beginning....then completely crumble?

Twice, both times to Oklahoma...LMFAO...

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)Fact of the matter is.....when Willingham was coach....I never even though about turning on the ND game...or discussing them....but now that Weis is there....they're front page news...everyones watching, everyone's interested.

You must not have been watching much football if you think that Willingham got less pub than Weiss his first year out...As the first minority to coach there, all of the media was watching "America's Team" every game out...Notre Dame hiring Willingham was HUGE news, and mega scrutiny...We have a Notre Dame fan in the thread, ask him...

You couldn't turn on the TV without them talking about Notre Dame's amazing perfect start, especially since Notre Dame had sucked every year before...You mean to tell me amidst all the hoopla, and an undefeated season at this point in time, Notre Dame fans could have wished for more..?

LG...

I am up EVERY Saturday, and have been since about 1991, watching college football...I love the game...I am a student of it, and huge fan...This is wrong on so many levels, I can't even begin to explain it...To me, this is a clear cut of unearned privledge, I've looked from every angle, and given every benefit of the doubt...You present some of the better arguments I've read, and usually put something in my mind to think about, but not this time...At this point somebody from Notre Dame would have to break this shit down to me, and so far the school is quite mum about it...

But, we'll see...The truth of the matter is Notre Dame isn't that good...They are 5-2, and despite Brady Quinn being that dude, they don't have a quality win...Heh...We'll see this weekend, ND plays Tennessee...

This was foul, and God don't like ugly...Mark my words...

Notre Dame really had no choice but to give whoever they hired this time as their coach a long extension due to the fact that the last five years has been a coaching marry-go-round with O'leary and Willingham coming and going. The only way they can guarantee themselves good recruiting classes year in and year out is to show high school blue chip players that their staff will be in place for a long time. What Weiss did in the NFL doesn't mean shit because about two thirds of NCAA coaches who previously coached in the NFL fail in college. Weiss has a good offensive mind so the 10 years he got is alright but ND is retarded for shelling out all that $$$$$$. Unless they join a conference they will never win another championship because their schedule is just too brutal.

Their average maragin of defeat is like...2 points... they aren't getting smashed when they lose man...so in no way is this a horrible team

and you forgot to speak on the main issue I presented.....how can Willingham and Weis even be comparable when this guy only has 1 win this season......doesn't that prove that maybe ND got it right by not giving him an extension.

I agree the extension was premature to most people. I am a huge patriots fan.....so I already believe Weis is the man no matter where he coaches, and I see him doing great things for ND, but that is just my optimistic POV on this issue, therefore I am able to stand behind Weis...regardless of how early it comes...because the extension was gonna come one way or another man...theres no doubt about it.

I just hate the fact that the good news about Weis getting an extension is getting overrun by the "THIS IS RACIST" crowd.

I'm just so sick of EVERYTHING having to have racial connotations to it. Weis got a premature raise because ND possibily made a mistake.......Willingham didn't get a extension because it was protocol to not give extensions...not because he is black...and everyone hates black people.

That issue was beat dead back when it happened, when he was released.....Anyone talking about his extensions now? Nope...because the team he is caoching now is fucking horrible.

I also dont like how the positive attention he brought to the field was "this is the first black coach here" yadda yadda...he gets attention for being black....but once he gets fired...ND is racist.

Blah.....I just hate any time someone cries racisim about something that is totally unrelated.

Charlie Weis getting a 10 year extension in no way, shape, or form has anything to do with racial issues....end of story.

Another rant...

Another attempt to avoid the question...Forget about the teams and the wins and all that...Let me just ask you ONE simple question...

Do you think that that opportunites for each and every person in this country are equal..? How do you feel when you see that there are over 100 division one teams in the NCAA...

And 3 black head coaches...

That makes sense to you..? That seems fair..? And I'm not saying that every instance is racially motivated...But good grief man...Surely you know better that I would jump up on the race bandwagon, there is no possible way that you could hate that shit more than me...

Assuming that alone has some merit, and some responsibility, how is it you continue to think that this is OK..? You keep saying it has nothing to do with race, LG, race was ALL over Willingham being hired in the first place...Why am I the only one that finds it odd that this is 2005, and we still have "Firsts" in anything..? Anyway, if I must continue to blow you out of the water on these "points" you keep making...

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)and you forgot to speak on the main issue I presented.....how can Willingham and Weis even be comparable when this guy only has 1 win this season......doesn't that prove that maybe ND got it right by not giving him an extension.

We are talking about Notre Dame...The original topic of the thread, is why Weiss and not Willingham...At this point 3 years ago, Willingham was doing better than Weiss...Easily...Why not make him the commitment, if this is indeed based on performance..? We don't know what Weiss will do in the next years, but either way, he'll be doing them at Notre Dame, and I hope he does them well...Might I remind you that Weiss is winning with Willingham recruited talent, I don't see why you keep bringing that up...It hurts your argument...And I'm not saying Weiss can't coach, its obvious he can, but he hasn't done a single thing to warrant a fucking 10 year extension...And that's the bottom line...Premature isn't the half of it, when you fired the coach prior to before his contract was up...With a winning record...

QUOTE(Lost Ghost)Blah.....I just hate any time someone cries racisim about something that is totally unrelated.

You must have missed the press confrence where the man said he felt for his safety...I guess he made that up...There isn't a single person in all of South Bend Indiana that still has a bit of a chip on their shoulder...Most of the people that were racist then, are guess what, racist now and still in control of that university...I guess I'm making all that shit up about the student body and all being in an uproar about the damn black mascot...There is no way that Willingham didn't have any EXTRA pressure to perform because of his race...He wasn't scrutinized carefully...Shit, Bob Davie, the coach before Willingham...He had his stint...Fucking sucked...But I bet you that he rode his contract out...

Yeah LG, we are all making up this racist shit, racism doesn't even exist anymore...As long as minorities aren't being lynched out in public, and can drink outta the same water fountains, all is well...At the end of the Civil Rights movement, the KKK and all the other people that had less than kind remarks about non whites, said, "My Bad," and let by gones be by gones...

I don't know what the fuck I was thinking...It makes a ton of sense for Notre Dame to give Weiss an extension...Despite the shaky record, he IS a good coach...There are no racial undertones here, move along people, nothing to see...I guess I should simply ignore it, and believe that maybe one day, I could have a chance to coach in the NCAA's, grab me a little 10 million dollar raise, after I take my local HS football team to state championship...According to LG, my chances of doing that are as good as anybody elses...

Notre Dame hoped the Fiesta Bowl would mark the start of a new dynasty, but Ohio State sent the Irish to an eighth straight bowl loss.

QUOTESOUTH BEND, Indiana -- It took Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis only seven games to earn a new contract.

Notre Dame has signed Weis to a new 10-year deal, the school announced Saturday.

they say not counting this year.....81 teams have won a bowl game since the Irish....EIGHTY-FUCKING-ONE.

I mean...waht does that say about Willingham...he wasn't getting it done either....

oh and btw...talking about how they finish....they both had the same record at the end of the season....so it's still unfair in that since...but let me tell you what Wiess said...and to me it makes sense...

"Willinham didn't come from 15 years and success in the NFL....the reason they signed me to a big contract is to tell everyone that when that next NFL job opens up...Charlie Wiess is staying in ND.....so don't bother."

or something along those lines...and to me it makes sense...
