I was planning to go into Marketing as well...sports marketing would be a very interesting idea....I'm not sure of the specifics right now...but I plan to look into them..

marketing is always a good thing to look itno a bit, but a horrible major. For marketing, major in business admin, and take some tech art and design classes, and a good cultural humanities set (focus on ethnography may help in the mong run) and you'll be more likely do well in marketing than a person with a major in business marketing.

Here's how it will go:

Marketing major becomes marketing intern... may get paid in a few years, if they are still there.

Business major becomes an admin, gettin paid, and gets promoted into Marketing (and has a college education to validate said move), while retaining a solid foundation in other areas of the company, and demonstrating growth as well as company loyalty, even if it is a move from accounting or human resources. Thus, they seem more like a real person who really cares about the company - and has intimate knowledge gained as being part of the operations in other departments. This effectively gives you an associate edge without the unpaid internship of doom... and you add value to the marketing department, thus you are less likely to be the first one cut. (cause marketing is one of the first areas downsized in cutbacks)

See, here's the thing they forget to tell you. You move around in a company.

You are better off finding out WHO you want to work for than WHAT you want to do... even if it is YOURSELF you want to work for.

and for marketing, it is about who you work for... cause it will either be an in house market team which is highly expendable, or a marketing agency, which is constantly under risk analysis and has to be hungry or connected to succeed. A "marketing home businessman" should just go into a real estate program. That is about all he will get, and IF he gets some good gigs, he will need a full design team to implement them. That leaves him with the initial making of a firm of his own, but little earnings as he tries to build the business. On the other hand, a guy who works for 6 years at say, a bank, after a decent business education will earn job experience. He can take that experience with him, and will have a oh-kay job, so he will be more eligible for loans, and have cash on hand. He may have also made some decent connects to help with his goal... and understanding of the financial side of the business, and will certainly have the chance to learn al he needs about taxes, including that it is not always good to make better profits,.. claiming a business as a loss can be an VERY effective strategy, and even though he has been working at the bank for 6 years, maybe for the last two, he has claimed his business as a loss.

Let's say (miracles happen) and you get two clients, and a third prospect in the third year. What sounds better for a marketing company?

a. "I just started, fresh out of school, and would love to show you what I can do. Golly we'd love this account, sir, and we'll do our best."

or

b. "After concentrating on our industry presence, and a comprehensive strategy focusing on the need for our client's dynamic impact on their target demographic, we have seen an increase in our internal pipeline over the last three years, which has yielded a 200% increase over projected intake. This far exceeds the expectations and overall capacity of the companies providing similar services in our category. As a businessman, it is easy for you to see why we have customer retention and business expansion; Our customers are satisfied because their business plans are being realized. Even before we have set up your account, you will find our experience allows us a flexibility that marks us as ready for a continuance of prime growth expansion."

If you can't see the difference between those two statements, you have no future in marketing.

When they ask you what you want to be,.. what they should ask you instead is "what do you want to be DOING in six years." because if you are thinking further ahead than 6 years, you are far too far-sighted to focus on any real opportunity in your life right now.

aaaaaannnd I need a phone number or email address from you...because you are obviously going to serve me better than any guidance consoler at school ever could......I dont know what i want to do...but I do have an idea on what I want to be doing.... So I'm already thinking in your terms....but that leaves me with a blank look on my face when you ask "whats ya' major?" and "where ya goin' to college?" Charles sounds like a good career advisor.... pm me man...

This is one thing that I have been doing. I want to work for Nike and want to help them with designs, public relations, anything. That's kind of why I'm most likely gonna go to Univeristy of Oregon. They have the best sports marketing program in the nation and Phil Knight went there and supports the school like crazy. That's the first place he looks for hiring
