Overtime in the NFL needs to be like overtime in college football. Each team gets it on the 25 and bashes it out until someone gets stopped. That's the way it needs to be done...

It's not sloppy, it's exciting. It's all about which team can play the best through the entirety of the overtimes. And having to go for 2 after the 3rd OT....genius

You know, as much as I hate ties in sports, I don't mind it in football. It's no like it happens all that often, and it hardly matters in the standings for the playoffs. Next year's draft maybe, but if you're already counting on the draft next year, that says something about your season this year.

And yes I hate the "sudden death" overtime they have now. I think it should be a shortened extra quarter like in basketball. Like a 5-7 minute overtime. That way, if a team can hold the ball for the entire time, well, tough for the defense. Let's be honest, a 5 min drive in the NFL is pretty hard to do in the 4th quarter, let alone overtime. The defense had lots of opportunities to get the ball back. That way you don't just rely on the coin toss, and get rid of "lucky" plays like kick returns, defensive TD's, and blown coverage. Plus coaches can't wuss out and just kick a FG just to score first.

Plus I hate the college overtime since it can go on forever. It's almost the exact opposite of NFL overtime, but it still comes down to who makes the first mistake. And the longer it goes, the play just gets sloppy.

Farve will still be his same turnover self come playoff time.... now if Flacco and the Ravens, or even Edwards and the Bills destroyed the Pats in the playoffs, then maybe. But until you take them out w/ Brady, just take what you can get while you can and get back on the bus.

This is the only question that need be asked about the ridiculous sudden death overtimes of the NFL was asked by Donovan McNabb...

Can the Super Bowl end in a tie..?

If the answer is no, then that means no game should be able to end in a tie, period...What an obscure, ridiculous rule the NFL refuses to get rid of...

Well I can understand having the regular season different than playoffs. Of course you can't have a playoff game end in a tie. Just like during the World Cup - the pool play can end in ties, but after that you battle to the end.

But with that said, I don't like ties either

OK, here's the basic rule for those who don't know:

1) In the regular season, a game tied at the end of regulation time (4 15 min quarters), there shall be one 15 min. "sudden death" overtime period.
2) "Sudden death" = first team to score wins regardless of time remaining .
3) Coin toss to determine who gets ball first. Same as start of game. Visitor calls. Winner to chose receive or kick, loser decides on direction.
4) Each team gets 2 (I think) time outs.
5) All challenges are booth reviews only. Under the same rules within 2 mins of the end of games, or college.
6) If at the end of the 15 min. period the score is still tied, like Sunday, the game ends in a tie. No additional time added.

However in the playoffs, the only thing that changes is the fact that no game can end in a tie since the NFL playoffs is a single elimination format. Thus each game needs a winner to know who advances. If the game remains tied after the first overtime period, then it's like the end of a regular quarter. The teams switch direction, and the game continues. I think. I don't really remember a playoff game ever lasting more than one overtime period. And I think there is a 2-3 min. intermission between extra periods if needed.

And how McNabb didn't know this boggles the mind. And even then, why say so? It just makes him look bad, stupid even. It makes one wonder, if he did know, would there have been a greater sense of urgency from him, rather than a "don't make a mistake, we'll wait for a better opportunity" attitude? I'd have to wonder if this is really the guy I want leading my team. Just seems like when the pressure is on, he fails to come up big.

I honestly wonder if it is just a stunt. How could a 10-year veteran not know about ties? I think the last one was in 2003, which wasn't too long ago. I can't believe he didn't know

I think Donovan had a moment...Sometimes, when the cameras are on, and the pressure is up, he will say some dumb shit...I'm sure the smartest of us have said things we don't really believe, or blurt them out...Like he did when he said, 'Black quarterbacks have to do a little extra' to be accepted...Maybe so, but that's a life rule, not a football rule...There are black QB's all over the league sir, what you need to do is win...Not be white...

He should have said the rule is dumb as fuck, and that if a tie can be the difference between you winning and loosing your division, the game should have a winner...Ties in the NFL are infrequent, but that's not an excuse to keep them...I'm not saying adopt the rule as it is in every other level of football, no no, you can keep your ridiculous pride, but at least make it so that there is a winner and a loser...

It sucks not to be able to watch the game live; and watching it on nfl.com/live sucks even more because they don't showcase the game, they opt to put in unnecessary commentary of the game. What? You'd be lucky to see a full 10-15 minutes of actual playing time if watching online. Bleh :?
