FYI, there is a way to set your auto-draft so you have a better way of drafting players you like. You can rank each player by position and overall rather than using the ESPN, or what ever league you're in, rank system.

It's still not the same as showing up for the draft, but you do exert some control over your initial roster.

And as far as the ESPN auto-draft goes, I think it just picks the best available player, regardless of position. Other leagues I've seen draft the best player for each starting roster spot, then the best player regardless of position so you have a full starting squad for at least week 1. Don't really remember the draft all that much, but I don't remember it filling spots first.

On the other hand, when others use the auto-draft, you know exactly who they are going to draft if they don't preset their rankings. Let's you wait on guys you like, or grab them early if you know they are going to be picked by the auto-draft.

Oh, and no rush DL.

My place was the exact opposite. A grand total of 0 kids. Most are grown up, and the only younger ones I see around are punks anyway.

But as far as your team, it's all about guys staying healthy. I mean, if Brady was still around, Randy Moss would most likely be in the top 10 if not 5 in points (and I'd have a few more points/wins). Not to mention T.J. and Carson Palmer. Not to mention the "Alstot" effect, i.e. LenDale White to your Chris Johnson. But I get the feeling you're draft your team the same way my brother drafted his fantasy baseball team, looking a bit too often to your fav team. He loaded up on Mets, yet somehow won, and I think you would have loaded up on Pats if you could. Not that Moss and Brady are bad choices, but if the teams goes bad, or even bye weeks, you get hit hard. Just a thought.

I'd agree with ya except that I really do think Brady and Moss are the best at their positions but otherwise I try to stay away from the Pats players. It just happens to be one of those years where everyone seems to be having injuries or sub-par seasons. So I bitch alot but I'm mostly kidding I'm just looking forward to next year.

Close encounters of the fantasy football kind
By LADD BIRO
Special to The Star

Willis McGahee called last night and asked me to pass along this message to his fantasy owners: “Yes, I hate you.”

I got a letter from Michael Vick, postmarked from Cell Block D, last week. Said he led his prison league in rushing, but had completed only 40 percent of his passes. Is hoping Matt Jones will be there in time for the playoffs. “I’ll bet the Falcons can’t wait to get me back!,” he mused. “Haven’t seen any games, but they must be dog-awful with a rook under center…”

I texted a note to Ricky Williams congratulating him on his first 100-yard game since 2005. “Yeah, man, I was smokin’!” I couldn’t hit delete fast enough.

Jake Delhomme shot me an email this morning asking why I hadn’t responded to his text messages last night. “Didn’t get them,” I said. “Must’ve been intercepted.” He didn’t think that was funny.

Brett Favre left a voice mail for me. He sounded depressed because his wideouts wouldn’t make eye contact with him after the game. “I could hear Cotchery and Coles across the locker room, griping about scoring 47 points and only getting one catch each. Wide receivers are so dang sensitive these days!”

Speaking of which, I heard the Colts enrolled Marvin Harrison in an 11-step program. When I asked why it wasn’t 12, they said he’d already lost a step.

I ran into Tony Romo over the bye week at a local travel agency. He had just booked a surprise vacation with Jessica leaving right after New Year’s. “But that’s the first week of the playoffs,” I said. “So?” he replied. Uh oh.

My cell phone rang as I was writing this. Someone named “Culpepper” was calling. Figured it had to be a wrong number. Haven’t seen that guy in years.

I called Chris Chambers to see how he was feeling. “I’m great, man. I’ll be back right after the bye.” When I reminded him the Chargers were off in Week 9, all I heard was “Oh, sh…”, before the line went dead.

I rang the Seahawks training facility the other day looking for D.J. Hackett. The receptionist told me he had moved to Carolina in the offseason. Who knew?

Shot Mike Singletary a note wishing him well on his Monday Night Football debut tonight. He sent back a picture of his rear end and told me he didn’t have time to chat with some silly columnist. “I’ve got a game to win. Grrrrr!”

I sent Kerry Collins an email, asking him how it felt to be 9-0. “It’s great,” he replied, “but Coach Fisher got mad at me for ignoring the game plan. He said the next time I throw a pass in the red zone, he’s trading me to Detroit.”

LOL @ that article...Nice one IO...

I just checked the box for my match today...Looks like I'm going to get creamed...Man, I had so many hopes for this season, but a few pleasant surprises has me feeling the season isn't a total loss...If I can finish with at least a .500 record, I think I'll consider this a win in that I'll officially be a fantasy football fan...

But I tell you one thing, I have players on my team I didn't really give a damn about, but now that they're underachiving I can't stand them, lol....

Don't sell yourself short. Actually no one should. After this week, spots 4-8 will all have 4 or 5 wins. That pretty much means everyone still has a chance for the top tier playoffs. And with the tie the other week w/ DL, you two have the best chance to sneak into the 4th seed. And if you win this week, it's almost like a 2 game lead since you'll only have 5 losses, DL 6, and All-Pro, 4th, and BS all have 7 losses with 2 weeks to go. They will all need to get more wins than you since they have more losses. Hence your tie being huge.

Or look at it this way, if things hold up as they are heading into Monday, you only need one more win to lock up at least a tie for the 4th seed. And as your team plays mine next week... well, let's just say I'm open to "suggestions" about my roster!

Then again I still have an outside shot at IO and the top seed... however unlikely.

so, um yeah, I have no shame when it comes to bribes fellas... ;)

OK, here's what I'm slowly starting to find out...With no Tom Brady, nothing in the NFL is exact...Thus, it makes this Fantasy Football season chaotic...Funny I should say that, its my first fantasy season, lol...But still, lets consider this...The Chargers suck...Who would have thought people would be thinking LT was in a decline..?

All season Ryan Grant has been abysmal...And then, against the Bears, he has a breakout game..? The Ravens haven't allowed 100 yards rushing all season by a team...And then give up 200 to the G-Men...This week, I didn't have a single player score an offensive touchdown...Not a one...Not Adrian Peterson...Not Plaxico...Not Matt Ryan (against Denver, cmon!)...Nobody...

If there's anyone who thinks there is a science to this they're crazy...In fact, I think the reason why some people think its fun is because of that very reason...

Here's the way I look at it. Can you turn it into a "science"? Sure, the same way some look at betting on sports in general. It's all about what your goals are. If you want to win at all costs, like gamblers, then sure you're going to put more effort to study up on your bets. You study trends, past performance, weather, all that other junk most of us throw by the wayside.

I'll be honest, when I used to bet on games, I did a lot more research on teams. But fantasy football is just for fun here. For me, and i think most of the others here, it's all about bragging rights no? From, I'm better than you, to I'm luckier than you, to "you suck, I don't". Like I said, fun. Thus for the most part I'm an optimist. Now if we had money on the line, even say $25, things would be different. No doubt I'd be a total A-hole. Wouldn't help anyone, give advice (not that mine's any good, trust me on that one I drafted Winslow over Gates), and would look over team pages and injury reports every day rather than just the ESPN stuff once a week.

I don't want it to be a "job" thus never wanted to play in money leagues, or leagues where the guys are so serious they go ape $hit if you forget to start someone on your bench and they have a huge game. It's just to add a little more excitement to the football season. And hopefully give me something to cheer for since my Bears seem destined to disappoint yet again.

Yeah, this is my first fantasy season as well, so it's to my surprise that I miss the draft, know nobody on my roster except for Portis and the Steelers D/ST, pick up the current 1st half MVP Kurt Warner off waivers, and if all bodes well tonight, I'll occupy the 1st place ranking alone for the first time in nealy two months. That goes to show it's not an exact science, it's "more than a feeling". :p

Also, I'm not quite ready for a money league either because I still don't know jack about the game, its game-changing players, and all the underlying factors that drive the gambling rings into a multi-billion dollar industry year-after-year. That's why I don't vote in or watch the Pro-Bowl just yet, since I've only followed the NFL off-and-on for the past seven years, this being the first year I really had my eyelids pulled back to enjoy and take in the "real" aspect of it all (ironic in the sense it took me participating in dual-fantasy leagues to do so, but that's not as important).
