"Yaltabaoth" is not quite the devil. It is the origin of self identity, as the limits of the understanding of the self. The Gnostic Demiurge. The name means "I, who am just" - he is the origin of self-righteousness.
Let's use the Solar system as an anology. Were Mercury to turn his head outward, he would see all the planets in the orbs, and mistakenly believe it is he that they revolve around. He would see how "small they were" and how far they were from him. He would likely develop a big head about it. And anytime any of the other "planets" looked at him, they would be overcome with such a radiance and power as to hold them that this would cause him to be completely convinced that he was the origin of all the power,.. that is actually coming from the sun behind him.
Understanding can transcend the self, but at that time, it is no longer your Knowledge, it is True Understanding. To know this is the Mystery of Wisdom, and to achieve it is the Purpose of Humanity, and the Grace of Divine Providence.
To those who do not understand this, Yaltabaoth is a devil. To those who understand this, Yaltabaoth is but a spectre. a clingfilm barrier on the beauty of the Universe, but no one that can not be just ripped aside, for he preserves a sacred balance, just as Mercury has a function in preserving the orbit in the Solar System. One must pass through the Yaltabaoth, by becoming it and transcending it by shedding all concieved notion that ones righteousness makes one Just. It is something which radiate far beyond the realm of who you imagine yourself to be, and is much closer to the core of who you ARE.
It is for this reason that Herme was not a Dios, but the Angelos, the Messenger. A self-serving messenger is not to be trusted, for obvious reasons. A true detatchment of the self will show not a self-sacrifice is needed, but that a self-dedication to something infinitely larger than your own limited understanding of your Self requires you to focus on larger issues than a over-absorbed insistence for your own base desires to be fulfilled.
