Advertising

A school of music that studies the rhythm of nature, a school of fashion that studies the elegance of the Universe, a school of design that studies the architecture of the ancients, a school of philosophy that studies the time-tested Truth.

QUOTE(Kramer)Ok, I did a quick scan and didn't see this topic. This is my first topic, so go easy.  :P  lol

I was waiting at the bus stop today, and I turned and looked at the hard plastic seats that they sometimes have. On the side I noticed a sign that said, "You just proved that bench signs work."

Now, I'll admit that I was a little ticked that they caught me... lol But it got me thinking... did they really catch me?

I mean, the whole point of advertising is to seduce people into using their service or buying their product, right? If you don't use their service or buy their product, did the advertisement work? I would say no. But the bench sign suggests that if you read the advertisement, then it did work.

I agree with you, NO, the advertisment did not work in your specific case.

It is commonsense to rest the legs and feet, and also commonsense to make use of available seating rather than drag around your own chair wherever you travel.

If that bus stop had a number of seats provided by different companies, and after reading the advertisments on display, decided to choose that particular seat, then YES their advertising worked.

Unless you wanted to sit on the ground and get your arse all covered in dirt or grass, you would have sat down on a seat, regardless of advertising signs.

You don't need advertisments to engage your commonsense.

Take this hypothetical scenario- you are completely blind. You go to the bus stop to await transport, and want to sit down. You find some available seating and use it. Did you see the bench sign? NO. So the advertisment did NOT work, even though you used the product.

Often I will use products without even noticing signs or advertising. Product shelf placement could theoretically influence my decision, as I know that from studying multimedia- you notice the things that are right in front of you. But I admit, at times I will not notice anything even if it is sticking right in my face (like when searching for food in the fridge), and I'll select something else- so in that case not even product placement advertising has worked.

QUOTE(fatboy42)I see that same thing used in the newspaper classified ads around here.   Usually it is one of the small box type ads that say something like:   Small ads work too or you wouldn't be reading this.  Contact us for rates.

I don't agree with that. Just because you're reading something, doesn't mean it has caught your attention.

You need to read it all FIRST to know, or not know/understand what it is. Just looking at something doesn't mean it has caught your attention. It doesn't control your line of sight.

If I see something, then go "Hmm, that's a good thing", or "What the hell is that?", THEN the advertising has worked, as it has hold of my attention. But until I have a decent look, the advertising is yet to work.
