NFL Bans Alcohol Form All Team Functions and Flights
NFL clubs may no longer serve alcohol at team functions or on buses or flights, extending a ban that until now applied only in locker rooms.
NFL owners and executives were told Thursday by commissioner Roger Goodell that the rule pertains not only to players but to owners, coaches and guests.
"I believe that no constructive purpose is served by clubs continuing to make alcoholic beverages available, and that doing so imposes significant and unnecessary risks to the league, its players and others," Goodell wrote to all 32 teams in a letter obtained by The Associated Press.
The commissioner's letter separates him from, among others, baseball commissioner Bud Selig. After St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock died a month ago in what was ruled an alcohol-related auto accident, Selig said a decision on banning beer in clubhouses was a team matter, not a league one.
Goodell's letter is in keeping with his policy of setting strict standards for behavior by players, coaches and officials after a year of numerous arrests, many of them for alcohol-related offenses. He has imposed strict suspensions on those who violated those policies, including a yearlong suspension for Tennessee's Adam "Pacman" Jones, which is currently under appeal.
The letter is addressed to chief executives, club presidents, general managers and head coaches.
"Effective immediately," it reads, "clubs are prohibited from providing alcoholic beverages, including beer, in any club setting, including in locker rooms, practice or office facilities, or while traveling, including on team buses or flights.
"This prohibition extends not only to players, but to all team personnel, as well as to other guests traveling with the team or who have access to club facilities."
The ban was sent with the approval of the NFL Players Association and the player advisory council, a group of veterans appointed in early April to advise Goodell on player issues.
That group includes union president Troy Vincent, currently a free agent; safety Donovin Darius of Jacksonville; fullback Tony Richardson of Minnesota; center Jeff Saturday of Indianapolis; linebacker Takeo Spikes of Philadelphia; and wide receiver James Thrash of Washington.

Dolphins Finally Complete Trade For Trent Green
The game of stare-down that had stretched to nearly two months finally ended Tuesday evening when the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins finally reached agreement on the much-anticipated trade of quarterback Trent Green.
Miami agreed to send a fifth-round choice in the 2008 draft to the Chiefs in exchange for Green. The choice can escalate to a fourth-rounder if Green reaches certain predetermined playing time and performance levels. Miami had been offering a sixth-round choice and the Chiefs had held firm in their demands for a fourth-round pick.
The trade is contingent on Green passing a physical exam with the Dolphins, but that is considered academic. Although Green missed half of the 2006 season because of a severe concussion sustained in the opener, he has suffered no lingering effects.
Green, 36, had been deemed expendable by the Chiefs, who plan to give second-year veteran Brodie Croyle an opportunity to win the starting job.
A 14-year veteran, Green has six times thrown for 3,000-plus yards in a season and has three seasons of 4,000 or more yards. He has completed 2,143 of 3,527 passes for 26,963 yards, with 157 touchdown passes and 101 interceptions in 112 games, including 107 starts.

Well they did draft Jamarcus Russell who may become a great NFL QB. I think they should trade for Culpepper though so Russell has a vet to learn from

Culpepper Asks To Be Released
Miami Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who initially wanted to stay and compete against new quarterback Trent Green, has asked for his release.
The release is something that should happen very soon.
Culpepper, giving a clean bill of health this week by Dr. James Andrews, initially welcomed the competition of Green when the Dolphins traded a conditional fifth-round choice to acquire him. After a couple days of being told the team was going a different direction at quarterback, he has asked for his release.
"I want to take this opportunity to give an update on my status with the Miami Dolphins," Culpepper said in a statement Thursday. "After hearing public comments from Coach Cameron and Randy Mueller Wednesday, I have decided to aggressively ask to be released. I have written a letter to Randy Mueller and Coach Cameron to that effect and delivered it to them this morning before doing my workout."
The Dolphins have told Culpepper they weren't going to hold him hostage. Though they are trying to shop him in a trade for a low-round draft choice, they will probably cut him before their weekend mincamp. Culpepper has been willing to continue practice and could show up to try to practice with the team over the weekend.
The Dolphins probably won't risk the chance Culpepper, who is scheduled to make $5.5 million, could get injury. They can minimize the risk by cutting him.
"I feel it is necessary to obtain a release rather than seek a trade so that I would not bring the excess baggage of my present contract to a new team," Culpepper said in a statement. "I feel like my next team should have the opportunity to get to know me as a man and a player before they make any long term commitment. Even though it is frustrating, I had prepared myself for the possibility that I would not be given an opportunity to compete here since the week before this years NFL Draft. At that time it became obvious to me that my desire to compete would not trump established relationships."
The Baltimore Ravens may head a list of a few teams that could be interested in signing him once he's on the free agent market.

Ditka, DeLamielleure introduce DeMarco in fight to take care of ex-players
June 11, 2007
Pro football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka and Joe DeLamielleure introduced former Jaguars and Bengals offensive lineman Brian DeMarco on Monday as an example of the NFL players association's failure to guarantee the medical care of its former players.
In doing so, Ditka and DeLamielleure continued their battle with union boss Gene Upshaw and put a face to their campaign. The Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund has been established to provide medical relief for former players. Ditka, who is an analyst for ESPN, is on the organization's board of directors.
DeMarco, 35, said he and his family have been homeless three times since he retired in 2000 with back and elbow injuries, and he needed a cane to walk to the podium on Monday.
"My right leg is completely numb. I have extreme nerve pain in my arms," DeMarco said, according to The Chicago Tribune. "I have lost my grip ... my ability to hold my kids."
DeMarco said he exhausted his savings paying for medical expenses. He said he hasn't been given the opportunity to visit league doctors and hasn't received any response from the union in his requests for help.
"I am not the only one," he said, according to the Tribune. "Whether you played in the NFL or not, poverty is poverty."
"All we're saying is do the right thing," Ditka said in an interview with ESPN.
"I would like to see a fund established that would take care of retired football players ... that won't make them jump through hoops when they need medical assistance."
DeLamielleure again responded to Upshaw's comments about him and his criticism of his support for Gridiron Greats that appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News.
"He threatened to break my neck," DeLamielleure said, according to the Tribune. "I say that he stunk as a union leader for 20 years. Screw Upshaw. He stuck it to us for 20-some years.

My guess is Lavar Arrington is hoping Mr. Ditka is successful in his endeavor. Any update on him?

NAPA, Calif. (AP) -- Free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper signed a one-year contract with Oakland on Tuesday, giving the Raiders a backup plan for top draft pick JaMarcus Russell.

Brady Quinn Ends Holdout With Browns
Brady Quinn has agreed to a five-year contact with the Cleveland Browns worth $20.2 million, with $7.75 million guaranteed, ending his holdout.
The deal could grow to $30 million over five years with incentives.
Quinn, who was on his way to Cleveland to join his teammates on Tuesday, had been working out at an athletic training facility in Arizona while his contract was being negotiated.
Having missed the first 10 days of training camp, Quinn, 22, faces a considerable catch-up period at a position where the learning curve is already difficult. Although he performed in a sophisticated offense at Notre Dame, and under the tutelage of coach Charlie Weis, who is famous for developing quarterbacks, Quinn struggled in the spring workouts and minicamps.
Quinn likely has lost his chance to open the season as the Browns' starter but, given the continuing uncertainty at the position, could still challenge for playing time as the year progresses, particularly if the Cleveland offense sputters. Given the steep price the Browns paid to acquire Quinn, surrendering their first-round choice in the 2008 draft, he must be viewed as the franchise's long-term quarterback hope.
Third-year veterans Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson continue to vie for the No. 1 job this season. Frye was nominally listed as the starter when Romeo Crennel released his first depth chart on Monday, but the Browns' head coach cautioned against reading too much into that.
Quinn's signing leaves two first-round picks -- Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the top overall selection, and cornerback Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets, the No. 14 choice -- without contracts.
The 22nd overall choice in the draft, Quinn departed Notre Dame with 36 school passing and total offense records. He started 46 games and his 29 victories tied a Fighting Irish record. Quinn completed 929 of 1,602 passes for 11,762 yards, with 95 touchdown passes and 39 interceptions.
Although he possesses excellent size (6-foot-3, 232 pounds) and pocket stature, Quinn is a better athlete than most people think, and has good running ability. He was timed at the combine workouts at 4.73 seconds in the 40.
Uncertainty at quarterback is nothing new for the Browns, who have employed five different opening-day starters in the last five years. And through three dozen practices in the spring and now in the first 10 days of training camp, neither Frye nor Anderson has separated himself enough yet to have been vested with the No. 1 job.

Re: 2007 NFL General News Thread
Brady Quinn is going to be drafted by SOME knucklehead in every single draft. Then, he will be cut by the NFL's trading deadline by said GM.
When you play college ball against the best colleges out there, maybe 5 of the defensive players are NFL players. In the NFL... they are ALL NFL players. The defense is so much quicker and the game moves so much faster after the snap. Quinn may be the franchise's future, but he won't help your fantasy team this year guys.
