The term "The whole 9 yards" has its origin during WWII, specifically in the Pacific theatre. Due to supply shortages, ammunition was in high demand and was to an extent, rationed.
When flying on extremely dangerous missions, certain that combat would ensue, a pilot would ask his ground crew for the "whole nine yards." This was the length of the ammunition belt in the .50 calibur wing machine-guns. In other words, load 'er up, there is shootin to do.

Damn... I thought the phrase the whole nine yard came from a man that wanted his woman to do everything possible to him...
