well spoken opinion Pete.
but in America alot of people just wrap themselves in a stereotype, and get along fine. you simply have to learn how to deal with them... cause they are basically playing dress-up, and can be really great people otherwise.

I was debating with raum about your lack of knowledge on the topic.....I never said you didnt have any...
and no....you are ignorant.....the fact that you have to put quotations around music after you mention rap just shows your ingorance.
I think that metal trash shit is just a buncha people screaming at the top of their lungs....I dislike it....and my ignorance is clear on this topic because I dont listen to it often..
that emo shit....a buncha rich whiney punks crying about everything...
its still music......but according to you....because rap is cliche...and has gone away from its "fundemental principles"....do you even know what those are ?!
Stephen A Smith had an incredible episode yesterday about the hip-hop influence on sports....and they touched on a lot of these issues.

I admit that I am a little ignorant. It's just that I get so pissed off whenever I hear modern rap & hiphop. It's bloody EVERYWHERE! Blokes in souped-up Commodores playing that \"doof-doof\" music, all those ringtones adverstised, music videos, all over the bloody radio, shelves full of the stuff in stores, in tv shows, the whole media, there's no BALANCE!
I am also ignorant because I prefer instrument/guitar-oriented music, than vocally-oriented music. That fact definitely biases my opinions. It's like the music is secondary to singing, like they don't really care about the music, like they can just go and rip off someone else's riff from somewhere. Fro
Frankly, I prefer instruments to voice, I always have...
I feel like there's no substance in hiphop & rap, it just seems so materialistic. From most of of what I hear around me, there does not seem to be any heart or soul in it. And without proper instrumentation, I find it harder to embrace the substance that is there....
If I actually saw them play instruments like a band, rapping away (NO I do NOT mean rap/metal nu-metal, that is even WORSE!!!! *cringes* ), I'd respect it alot more.
I will admit this, after a few times of hearing Eminem's Lose Yourself, I noticed ALOT of substance. I found a connection, deep meanings, it had depth, character. So I guess I'm just exposed to alot of the CRAP hiphop & rap, and not the good shit... And that is what I dislike.
I also have a similar feeling towards virtuoso neo-classical rock/metal. To me it's a bunch of wanking, posh stuckup elitist-attidue guys stuck in their bedrooms mindlessly shredding away on their scalloped-fretboard Ibanez RGs/jackson/fender strats so in LUURVE with their guitar thinking they are King Shit -\"Oooh look at me perform this 350 bpm double-handed tapping lick in G#7MajorSus Mixolydian then scoop down with the whammy while fretting pinch harmonics on the 10th and 17th frets simultaneously behind my back in the key of B#7maj4sus locrian! Aren't I the best? You low-life punk who can't even sweep pick a simple Gminor lydian phrase!\"
Now I know not all of them are like that, and there are some guitarists that are brilliant! They truly are masters who know technique but also a sense of melody and when to throw music theory out the window and go by their gut and heart.
But alot of it shits me off, so unfortunately that tarnishes most of it for me.
Like with rap & hiphop.

I think alot of metal is trash too, they really are people screaming shit at the top of their lungs. It's utter garbage. I don't like ALL metal.

Exactly right. Those whinging sooks need a good kick up the arse....

Well, I discussed what some of those principles are in my post, at least what I understand them to be. It's not much I know, but there is alot for me to understand.
I don't mean to say I am going by face value- I know that alot of things are hidden deep beneath the outer layerings. But my perceptions, impressions, and the straight-out bottom line messages don't receive well in my psyche.
It is ignorant of me to say I hate rap and hiphop. Yes, some of it seems okay to me, and I think it would be better if I could accept it more. But ultimately, I just, don't, like, it.

Cool, thanks for that. I'd like to read it. I shall go and see the Sports forum if that was posted there.
Okay thanks.

Nah...its a show, I wanted to post it in the forum....but that'd require me taping the show and then typing out allll the dialogue...and it wasnt THAT good lol...
But......the main thing you gotta realize....is you can't say you hate all rap...when you mention songs like Lose Yourself...and you say you like those.....because songs like those are the type of songs I like as wel.......just switch "rap/hiphop" with the "mainstream rap/hiphop" and you're completely correct....and i got no beef..
I'm a huge rap fan...and even I hate a lot of the mainstream stuff.....

It IS ignorant (and hypocritical) for me to say I hate rap and hiphop, especially when it's mainly the mainstream stuff that I hear.
Yep, I guess what it all boils down to, is I hate MAINSTREAM. Mainstream hiphop & rap tends to bug me a little more than other mainstream stuff, but as I've heard, the REAL stuff is actually quite good......
I'm glad this has been straightened out. I feel bad for generalising like that and letting petty feelings get in the way, instead of putting some decent thought into it.

It's no problem.....I still do it from time to time....just takes someone to call your bullshit and not be a dick about it (like i normally am) and then its nothing but knowledge that comes from it..

If you're going to call it music then it's c-rap and should be consigned to the nethermost regions of MUSIC hell.
If you want to consider it as a "chanted prose/poetry" form then it's good stuff and I can enjoy it occasionally.
Don't ask me about favourites because I don't have any. I'm old enough to prefer a melody with the words.

@ jipper...I'm with LG...don't hate something just cuz you don't understand it...I don't have the highest opinions of some "old people music" but I will blame that on the fact that I am too young before I criticize the music itself..
