In slo's case, upgrading your RAM is always a good thing..!

I wouldn't completely rid myself of a paging file unless I had 1.5 GB or better, but with the amount you have, decreasing the paging file to about a set 512 MB on both ends, initial and max, should be fine...

sloindahed: buy ram and unless you're above 2gb when you do that, set your page file to set 512Mb.

Thanks brains. How would I know what value to set the page file to? 'Cause I've got a laptop that has 448MB of RAM (weird # I know) and I'd like to modify it's page file as well, if that would help it run a little better.

with XP you should have around 1.5Gb - RAM and page file combined to make it run properly.

the 448 is because part of it is shared. your RAM is used both as system and video RAM.

Ok... Brain or AYHJA... what does the page file do? What I mean is more on the lines of what am I losing by disabling my page file? What effects could it have negitively?

Would you recommend lowering it's page file size? And if so, how do you determine what size it should be?

A good rule of thumb is to set your paging file to double the amount of RAM that you have in your system if you have under a GB...

In your most recent case, the system w/512, I'd set the page file to a set size of 1024 MB...If you had a GB of RAM, I'd suggest setting the pagefile @ 512 MB, 1.5 GB of RAM, 256 MB, and anything over 2 GB of RAM I'd totally disable it all together or move it to another drive if you have one...
