I already conceded Golf is not an athletic competition, and rarely has it been a full-contact sport (but there have been times when we had been at sea a while, and we pulled in and got froggy with some clubs and a bottle of tequila /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />).
I also said it is a sport, in as much as the definition of sport is expanded past the realm of physically confrontational goal running sports. to me, the word sport is not sanctimonious to those contests. I also read more victorian, edwardian, even more Elizabethan writing than modern writing, so for me, many classical definitions are visibly different than the common speech of the day. to me, it still means "pass-time." Not all sportsmen are, to me, athletes.
and FURTHERMORE, I said the first time golf is found in writing it is called a "game", but that was a time when an activity could be sport, and and game as well. a game was a sport known to be the cause of unlawful wagers or "bets".
as far as atheletics, I played baseball (third base), football (running back), ran track, studied martial arts, and went to swim meets. I also practiced for boxing, but couldn't pack any weight on for it. (was 5'6" >120 lbs when I went to basic at 17, had to eat five meals a day to make 128 by time I left. but damn can I take a hit.) then I got ran over, and was told I would be lucky to walk without a cane. so, naturally, I took that as a challenge, overcame it, and waived into the navy. I can still bike 30 miles, but can hardly run ten, and that's with about 20 pounds of fat I could stand to get rid of, from having an office job and the need to drive everywhere, and some deep muscle I should firm back up. problem is I can out pushup or out sit up anyone I know on sheer willpower alone, even gym devotees, so it is difficult to validate. I know athletics, I just don't think I have ever seen a golfer worth his three iron who isn't at least a former contact-sport athelete or underwent specific physical training to excel.
I started playing golf with my dad, and I got to be pretty good. I have demonstrated a pretty good long game, because of double-jointed shoulders, and my short game is decent as of two weeks ago. I used to like to get drunk and ride around playing hockey with a golf cart, but I still appreciated the game when it was serious.
