Bills TE Likely Paralyzed
The Buffalo Bills' Kevin Everett sustained a "catastrophic" and life-threatening spinal-cord injury and his chances of regaining a full range of body motion are very small, an orthopedic surgeon said Monday.
"A best-case scenario is full recovery, but not likely," Dr. Andrew Cappuccino said, one day after performing a four-hour operation on the player. "I believe there will be some permanent neurological paralysis. ... A full neurological recovery was bleak, dismal."
Cappuccino noted the 25-year-old reserve tight end did have touch sensation throughout his body and also showed signs of movement. But he cautioned that Everett's injury remained life-threatening, saying the player is still susceptible to blood clots, infection and breathing failure.
Everett is currently under forced sedation and breathing through a respirator as doctors wait for the swelling to lessen. Cappuccino said it will take up to three days to determine the severity of the injury and the recovery process.
During the operation, Cappuccino repaired a break between the third and fourth vertebrae and also alleviated the pressure on the spinal cord. The process included a bone graft and the insertion of a plate and four screws.
Cappuccino said Everett was alert and is aware of the extent of his injuries.
"I was honest with him, and he told me, 'Do everything you can to help me,' " said Cappuccino, who works for the Bills as a consultant, specializing in spinal surgery.
Cappuccino received permission to operate from Everett's mother, Patricia Dugas, who spoke by phone from her home in Houston.
Everett sustained what the team called a cervical spine injury Sunday when he ducked his head while driving in to tackle Denver's Domenik Hixon during the second half-opening kickoff. Everett dropped face first to the ground after his helmet hit Hixon high on the left shoulder and side of the helmet.
"It's a tough situation to watch because he's somebody's son, brother and friend," punter Brian Moorman said Monday. "It's all you could think about during the game, after it happened, after the game and this morning. And we just want him to get better, we want him to heal."
Quarterback J.P. Losman said it was difficult to concentrate during practice.
"It seems like every couple of seconds that go by it's always popping into your head," Losman said. "Going through a walk-through, we're looking for him, wanting to hear his voice."
The Bills have Tuesday off before returning to practice to prepare to play at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Replays showed the player twitching for a few seconds as he attempted to get up before falling back to the ground. Everett had his eyes open but showed no further signs of movement during the next 15 minutes as the team's medical staff and emergency personnel carefully placed him on a backboard and, with the player's head and body immobilized, loaded him into an ambulance at the Broncos 30.
Coach Dick Jauron said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell called him Sunday evening, offering the league's support.
"We honor ourselves by our work, and we honor Kevin by moving forward and working while never forgetting Kevin and never getting him out of our thoughts and prayers," Jauron said. "We're going to wait and see what the outcome is here and we're really hoping and praying for the best."
Buffalo's 2005 third-round draft pick out of Miami, Everett missed his rookie season because of a knee injury. He spent most of last year playing special teams. He was hoping to make an impact as a receiver.

Separated Shoulder Sidelines Eli Manning For A Month
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has a slightly separated shoulder which is expected to keep him out at least a month, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Monday.
Doctors told the team that Manning should not need surgery, but the quarterback will get a second opinion from orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. After the game Sunday, Manning said the shoulder was just bruised and sore.
It was feared that Manning also had torn his labrum in Sunday night's 45-35 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, but an MRI determined that was not the case, sources said.
Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon emphatically denied that Manning had separated the shoulder and said that it was a contusion of the AC joint and he is day-to-day.
Hanlon added: "Don't be shocked if you see him playing on Sunday."
Top defensive player, end Osi Umenyiora, and the Giants' new starting running back, Brandon Jacobs also left the game with knee injuries. And backup cornerback Kevin Dockery left the game late in the third quarter with a right ankle injury.
The Giants announced on Monday that Umenyiora has an irritation to the lateral meniscus of his left knee. His status is also day-to-day and he will be re-evaluated later in the week.
Jacobs sprained the MCL of his right knee, the team said. He will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.
The results of the MRI on Dockery's ankle were not available as of 5 p.m. on Monday.
Manning threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Ward with 7:20 left that got New York within 38-28. After botching a 2-point try, the Giants got the ball back on Romo's only interception. Manning followed with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress, their third connection of the night, to make it 38-35.
But Manning didn't return, and the Giants were out of rallies.

Patriots Suspected of Stealing Opponent's Signals
NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said.
The camera and its tape were placed in a sealed box and forwarded to the league office for investigation, the sources said.
"We don't have any comment," an NFL spokesman said Monday.
The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game.
The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets.
It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.
In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.
"From what I can remember, he had quite a fit when we took him out," Harlan said. "We had gotten word before the game that they [the Patriots] did this sort of thing, so we were looking for it."
A Jets official declined comment Monday, directing an inquiry to the league office. The Patriots also did not have immediate comment.
"With anything along those lines, those are all league-related matters, and anything that deals with an issue like this or anything on a team-by-team basis, those all go to the league," coach Eric Mangini said in his news conference Monday.

Browns Trade Charlie Frye To Seahawks
Just one game into the season, the Cleveland Browns will make a change at quarterback, as the team on Tuesday afternoon dealt third-year veteran Charlie Frye, who started Sunday's regular-season opener but was benched early in the game, to the Seattle Seahawks.
It is believed that the Browns, who spent much of Monday seeking a trade partner for Frye, received a draft choice in return.
There is no word yet on who will start for Cleveland in next Sunday's home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The departure of Frye could pave the way for the Browns to turn the starting job over to first-round draft pick Brady Quinn of Notre Dame, but general manager Phil Savage on Monday cautioned that it might be too early for the former Notre Dame star to be elevated to that status.
Savage cited the 1999 season when, after a blowout loss to Pittsburgh, the Browns benched starting veteran Ty Detmer and moved first-round pick Tim Couch, the top overall selection in the draft that year, into the lineup. Cleveland finished 2-14 that season, and Couch, clearly not ready yet to start, struggled throughout the year.
There had been rumors following Sunday's lopsided loss to the Steelers that Frye might be traded or released. Frye completed only four of 10 passes for 34 yards and an interception in the game -- a QB rating of 10.0 -- and was replaced by Derek Anderson at 6;34 of the second quarter. Anderson did not fare much better, going 13-of-28 for 184 yards.
Those rumors gained some steam Monday when journeyman quarterback Ken Dorsey, who had been a mentor to Quinn in training camp, arrived at the Browns' complex. The team is expected to re-sign Dorsey, a four-year veteran, on Tuesday afternoon.
Frye, 26, was a third-round choice in the 2005 draft, and the former Akron star moved into the starting lineup in the final month of his rookie campaign. He started the first 13 games in 2006, then missed the final three outings of the year with a wrist injury.
In camp this summer, Frye competed with Anderson for the top job on the depth chart, and was named the starter the week before the opener. But the loss to Pittsburgh was disastrous and the Browns decided to make a quick change.
In his three-year career, Frye has completed 354 of 568 passes for 3,490 yards, with 14 touchdown passes and 24 interceptions, for an efficiency rating of 70.2. He has started in 19 of his 21 appearances.
With the Seahawks, Frye will be the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, behind starter Matt Hasselbeck and primary backup Seneca Wallace, who recently signed a contract extension. The Seahawks have been seeking another veteran quarterback since releasing David Greene in the final cutdown to the 53-player roster.

Dorsey may not be the most athletic QB, but I don't doubt he knows how to play the game...He'd be a great mentor to Quinn, who at this point should inherit the starting job by Week 6 if not sooner...

Doctors Now Optimistic that Everett Will Walk Again
Kevin Everett might walk again after all.
The doctor who performed the spinal surgery on Everett told Buffalo TV station WIVB on Tuesday that Everett has voluntary movement of his arms and legs and as a result he is optimistic that Everett will walk again.
Dr. Andrew Cappuccino told WIVB that Everett's sedation levels were lowered on Tuesday, allowing him to respond to verbal commands. WIVB also reported that Everett's latest MRI shows only a small amount of swelling on his spinal cord.
Dr. Barth Green, chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Miami school of medicine, agrees with the prognosis.
"Based on our experience, the fact that he's moving so well, so early after such a catastrophic injury means he will walk again," Green told The Associated Press by telephone from Miami.
"It's totally spectacular, totally unexpected," Green said.
Green said he's been consulting with doctors in Buffalo since Everett sustained a life-threatening spinal cord injury Sunday after ducking his head while tackling the Denver Broncos' Domenik Hixon during the second-half kickoff of the Bills' season opener.

New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for videotaping an opponent's offensive and defensive signals.
Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.
"This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field," Goodell said in a letter to the Patriots.

OJ Simpson Arrested For Armed Robbery
Las Vegas police arrested O.J. Simpson on Sunday amid an investigation into an alleged armed robbery at a hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, a source close to the investigation said.
The charges he faces are unclear.
On Saturday, Las Vegas police arrested a man and seized two guns in connection with the alleged armed robbery, the source said.
Simpson had already been questioned during the investigation into several items of sports memorabilia that were taken from collectors at a room in the Palace Station Hotel and Casino. Simpson has said the items belonged to him.
Walter Alexander was arrested Saturday night and charged with two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of burglary with a deadly weapon, the source said.
Alexander, a resident of Arizona, was arrested on his way to McCarran International Airport, the source said.
During searches Saturday, police recovered two guns they believe were used in the alleged robbery, the source said.
I don't know why they arrested him," Simpson said Sunday. "I've stayed in contact with the police and the truth will come out."
Simpson, 60, acknowledged that he entered the man's room with a group of friends, one of whom was posing as a potential buyer, after being tipped off that some of his personal items were for sale there.
Among the items were things he hadn't seen in years or that had been stolen, he said. They included photographs of his family and himself as a child, and photographs and negatives taken by his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. Simpson said friends helped him carry the items from the room, but no guns were involved and the incident was not a robbery.
On Saturday, Simpson said that he and one of the alleged victims, Alfred Beardsley, spoke by telephone and agreed the incident had been blown out of proportion.
Beardsley confirmed the conversation to celebrity Web site TMZ.com, saying Simpson apologized to him and told him he regretted the incident.
The other alleged victim, Bruce Fromong, a sports memorabilia collector, said that two of the men accompanying Simpson pointed guns at the other occupants of the room in what he described as "a home invasion-type robbery." Watch Fromong talk about what happened Video
Fromong testified for Simpson's defense in the 1997 wrongful death trial stemming from a civil lawsuit filed by the family of Ron Goldman, who was killed in 1994 alongside Simpson's ex-wife.
Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995, but the jury in a 1997 civil trial found him liable and awarded the Goldmans $33.5 million for their son's wrongful death.
Fromong testified that prices for Simpson memorabilia had dropped substantially since the 1995 verdict. His testimony was part of the defense's contention that Simpson could not afford to pay the Goldmans.
Also on Friday, Thomas Riccio, a former business associate of Simpson, told KVVU television in Las Vegas that he told Simpson about the sale.
Riccio said someone had told him last month that he wanted to auction some of Simpson's possessions by placing them on consignment. Riccio added that, when he called Simpson to tell him about the planned sale, the former athlete told him the items had been stolen.
Riccio said that, as he was being shown the items in the hotel room, Simpson entered the room and seized the items. He said there was no break-in and no gun was used.
Simpson's ex-wife and Goldman -- a waiter who had gone to her Los Angeles, California, home to return a pair of glasses -- were fatally stabbed outside her Brentwood townhouse on June 12, 1994. A jury found Simpson not guilty of the crimes.
Simpson recently wrote a book originally titled "If I Did It" and had planned to publish it himself, but a public outcry led to the cancellation of his book deal.
A bankruptcy judge subsequently awarded the Goldmans the rights to the book in light of their inability to collect the wrongful death award. They retitled the book "If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer," which is in bookstores.
