Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
I was happy to see Bama win so definately over UF.
I'm sickened by the BSU vs TCU match up though. Both teams fight all year to make it to a BCS game so they can prove that they're legit by beating a big time BCS program....only to get matched up against one another? That's shitty. Now absolutely nothing is at stake in this game. In what should be a chance to legitimize their programs...they're just playing the other one of the "lower teams who can beat bad competition". I mean seriously, what does the winner gain? They can beat another non-BCS team? That gives them no hope of legitimization, doesn't make a case for their program to be taken more seriously, doesn't help them out at all. Same goes for the loser. They just look like the worse team of the two, neither of which can tell where they properly fit within the CF rankings . Especially with the Cincy/UF matchup. They should have BSU play Cincy/UF and TCU play the other one. As it stands right now, both BSU and TCU have nothing to gain or lose by playing each other in the bigger scheme of things.
I mean, I don't think I need to be any clearer with this, because everyone here is pretty knowledgeable about football, but I've had this argument in the past and people have been confused. This analogy may help: BSU and TCU are like D-II programs essentially. They're fighting to be considered D-I year in and year out. Sure they've both beaten some D-I like competition this year, but they won't be taken seriously unless they take out a primere D-I program on the grandest stage. Both earned their chance...and instead they just get to play another good D-II school at the end. We'll never be able to properly gauge just how good these programs were...and it does nothing to help their D-II status in the future. It's pathetic.

Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
I had the same reaction when i saw that pairing... in a year where the top 4 teams in the ranking are all undeafeted, the need for a playoff becomes even clearer....
...anyone who loves the BCS was hoping for a Texas loss as it would have put Cinci or TCU in the game, "proving" that anyone could go to the big game.... but as it stands, we have just the big boys in the game and the little guys get to face each other... again....
Utah deserved a shot last year... anyone undefeated deserves a shot this year....

Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
I just want to point out that if TCU beats Boise tonight... the Mountain West will be 5 - 0 in Bowl Games this year....
Wyoming was an 11-point underdog to Fresno State: final score? Wyoming 35, Fresno State 28
BYU was a three-point underdog to Oregon State: final score? BYU 44, Oregon State 20
Utah was also a three-point underdog to California: final score? Utah 37, California 27
Air Force was a five-point underdog to Houston: final score? Air Force 47, Houston 20
The Mountain West might be the most underrated conference in all of college football and deserves inclussion into the BCS automatic bid brotherhood. IMHO
It has gone 4-0 in four bowl games in which every single Mountain West team was an underdog — that is unprecedented.
Expand it to 2 years and I have to ask, can any conference boast 10 more-impressive OOC victories over the last two years?
2009
Air Force 47, Houston 20: Houston was 3-0 vs. BCS teams.
BYU 44, Oregon State 20: OSU was four points away from winning the Pac-10.
Utah 37, California 27: Cal finished 8-5.
TCU 14, Clemson 10: Clemson was 9-5, and this was its only home loss all year. It was very close to being the ACC representatives in the BCS.
BYU 14, Oklahoma 13: Oklahoma was ranked third in the country at the time, and despite injuries, still finished 8-5.
2008
Utah 31, Alabama 17: Alabama was 12-1 entering this game. Its only other loss was to Florida, in a game that was much closer than this one.
TCU 17, Boise State 16: Boise State was 12-0 entering this game. In fact, this is Boise State's only loss in its last 26 games.
Utah 31, Oregon State 28: Oregon State was the only team to beat USC (12-1), and finished 9-4, playing one of the toughest schedules in the entire country.
New Mexico 36, Arizona 28: Arizona finished 8-5 that year. New Mexico was 2-6 in the MWC that year. This was one of four games in one weekend last year when the MWC went 4-0 against the Pac-10.
Wyoming 13, Tennessee 7: Tennessee finished 3-5 in the SEC that year, Wyoming was 1-7 in the MWC.
I might add that TCU, which absolutely dominated the Mountain West this year, might just be the best team in the country. (yes - I can't believe i just said it... but I would love to see them play the horns and see what happens)
If they crush Boise State and finish 13-0 (and they should be able to do this), they should be voted No. 1 in the AP poll regardless of what happens in the Alabama-Texas game.
Why? You want to argue strength of schedule?
TCU's opponents are a mind-blowing 6-0 in their bowl games.
With five undefeated teams finishing the season unblemished, we need a playoff now more than ever.

Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
LOOOOOL
OK - so I was wrong about my TCU prediction.... (it was still a fun game to watch)....
...but i stand by the rest of it... until we get a playoff system (not going to happen) the MWC should be invited into the BCS.
Hell - in my opinion, every conference should be invited in and get an automatic bid for their champion IF (and this would be the change to the current system) IF their champion can ALSO finish in the top 15... apply that rule across the board and even the little guys have a chance.
And if a BYU or a UTAH or a TCU win their conference and end up ranked 16, then I have no problem leaving them out of the big games. But if a 14 - 0 Boise ends up a highly ranked conference champion.... they deserve to be treated as any other BCS team.
That slight change would make the BCS inclusive of all teams and conferences and opponents of the BCS system would loose some of their arguments for a play-off.

I don't think that's a bad idea at all, but you know as well as everyone else the BCS isn't changing anything any time soon :(

Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
I'm still waiting to see that ''great'' game this year...Last year, I think there were quite a few good games, this year though, I think I've been disappointed, if only slightly...Hopefully the NC game will be good, but given my partiality for all things Longhorn, I'll settle for an ugly win over a great game in a loss...

Re: 2009 NCAA Football Thread
Based on that alone, I'd say Alabama, but I think as a general rule, you'd have to go Texas.
oh and uhh.... Go Bama?
