Yo Ty,
Tony Stark isn't a hero. He's an inventor. He looks out for numero uno, and "Iron Man" is an EMPLOYEE of Stark. It has been about the money for him, since he escaped Vietnam, where they took him hostage to try and influence his father's defense company, that Tony inherited. Even creating the first Iron Ma suit was a personal interest. He was supposed to be making them a weapon, but he was setting it up to treat his heart condition, and escape his captors.
It is not until "Armor Wars" that he feels a REAL implication and responsibility for his actions.
This is when he finds out AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) has been using hacked Stark data and designs to outfit vigilantes, villians, and anti-mutant interest groups. He sets out to claim his responsiblity for what has been done with Stark proprietary data and ideas.
He even joined the Avengers as an advertising move for Stark Enterprises. He is a good person, but Tony Stark is an undeniable CAPITALIST. In fact, the "hero image" bothered him, and that is why he developed a drinking problem that almost killed him and wrecked Stark Industries.
The BEST way to get into Iron Man is to not look for what makes him a "hero" but how he reacts to the fact everyone considers him a hero, and expects him to act accordingly.

Iron Man # 170 is a good spot to start
or
Iron Man # 200 where Stark reclaims the Iron Man role
or if you wanna just cut to the action (which has some expostional flashbacks that explain it all), then go straight to the Armor Wars: Iron Man #'s 225-232. ;)

Oh..!
Well I'm on the hotheat express, especially for comics...I think we just got a new comic store in town, but for the most part they are all 45 minutes away at least...When they come out in hardback, I buy them from Barnes and Noble...
And MAN...A comic subscription costs a fucking arm and a leg...Digital is the best format for my pockets at the moment...

Armor Wars is great,.. but beware. Some of the content feels "pushed in" to try and give it more volume to justify the individual issues.
no time for comics for me... sadly. I am not a front end consumer of comics anymore. I wait until there is enough of one to fill a book, and then pick it up. occasionally.
but i am really not feeling much in comics right now. Waiting for civil war to come to a resting point so i can catch up. But to be honest, it feels ALOT like a derived work, and lacks some *oomph* in implementing what initially sounded like a interesting premise.
