QUOTE(ruffriders23 or Wikipedia Rather)0 is the integer that precedes the positive 1, and follows −1. In most (if not all) numerical systems, 0 was identified before the idea of 'negative integers' was accepted.

Zero is an integer which quantifies a count or an amount of null size; that is, if the number of your brothers is zero, that means the same thing as having no brothers, and if something has a weight of zero, it has no weight. If the difference between the number of pieces in two piles is zero, it means the two piles have an equal number of pieces. Before counting starts, the result can be assumed to be zero; that is the number of items counted before you count the first item and counting the first item brings the result to one. And if there are no items to be counted, zero remains the final result.

While mathematicians all accept zero as a number, some non-mathematicians would say that zero is not a number, arguing one cannot have zero of something. Others hold that if you have a bank balance of zero, you have a specific quantity of money in your account, namely none. It is that latter view which is accepted by mathematicians and most
others.

raum said it...

0 is a numeral
0 is not a number

A number is indicative of value, a numeral is just that...I don't care if you folk think I've 'lost' look it up in the dictionary... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />

Numeral: A symbol or mark used to represent a number.

Number: a numeral or group of numerals.

So, if a number is a numeral, then a numeral, by definition, HAS to be a number. If A is equal to B, then B is equal to A.

Look up NAN, people.

NAN is "NOT ANY NUMBER", and it is a designation of numerical expressions that are not numbers, because they can't fulfill all the mathematical operators. And you cannot divide by 0. It is a numeral and also one of the numerals that is NAN.

Can you add 0? Can you subtract 0? Can you multiply by 0?

Sure can. Just because you cannot divide by 0 doesn't mean you cannot do any other math computation by it. When 1 thing doesn't work, you cannot give up and walk away.

0 you said is a numeral, and a numeral is used to represent a number. Therefor, 0 is a number.

ruff...

If you could please tell me how because of the simple fact you can put 0 in a mathematical expression, and that being grounds enough to make it a numer, I will be pleased and glad to read it...

0 (zero) is both a number †™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬‚

or, more precisely, a numeral representing a number †™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬‚

and a numerical digit. Zero is the last digit to be incorporated in most numeral systems. In the English language, zero may also be called nil when a number, when a numeral, and nought/naught in either context.

In mathematics, a natural number is either a positive integer (1, 2, 3, 4, ...) or a non-negative integer (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...). The former definition is generally used in number theory, while the latter is preferred in set theory and computer science.

Natural numbers have two main purposes: they can be used for counting ("there are 3 apples on the table"), and they can be used for ordering ("this is the 3rd largest city in the country").

Properties of the natural numbers related to divisibility, such as the distribution of prime numbers, are studied in number theory. Problems concerning counting, such as Ramsey theory, are studied in combinatorics.

So, can you count 3 apples? Yes... 1, 2, 3 apples. Now, go to a table with no apples and count them. There are 0 apples. You used 0 to represent the NUMBER of apples present. Therefor, 0 is a number.

OK ruff....Using this logic:

So, can you count 3 apples? Yes... 1, 2, 3 apples. Now, go to a table with no apples and count them. There are 0 apples. You used 0 to represent the NUMBER of apples present. Therefor, 0 is a number.

I'll ask you if -1 is a number...

Hell yes it is... YOU OWE ME ONE APPLE.

So, you are down 1 apple. If you get a bag of 5 apples, you owed me 1, therefor you have 4 apples. You are -1 apple prior to buying the bag.
