AFAIK, in the comic books everyone knew that Stark was Iron Man.

The movie pretty much kept very close to the original character. In fact, the suit that he first built in the movie was almost a clone of what Stan Lee created - and how bad "Iron Man" looked. Stark did indeed own a weapons corporation and was a playboy and genius.

Don't know when you started reading the comic. but here is the way it was in the 80's. His fiancee was the only one who knew he had to wear the metal breastplate, and it was Rhodey was the one who rescued his from the Wong chu. Tony offered him a job as his personal pilot.

Tony Stark was a funder of the Avengers, and Iron Man was his employee. He did this be Not even the avengers knew who Iron Man was outside the suit. It is not until the iron wars that anyone in the avengers really started to see tony stark was the new iron Man after Tony "fired" the old one. A quick searc h reveals that though rhodey saved Stark, in 1979... he never found out he was iron man until 1983. everyone else but his strict confidents found out in the 90's over 10 years later. And it still wasn't public.

Never read the Iron Man comic. I was mostly an X-Men reader and anything related (X-Factor, New Mutants, etc). I also read Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk comics.

That's why I stated "AFAIK" which means "as far as I know". ;)

Yah, it was just the reason I stated part of my technical problem with it. It fails to meet my understanding and expectations of Iron Man. For some people that is not as much of an issue, and i am not saying that it is universally bad. just saying that i was not excited by it. And i thought the Cgi was lacking and the cast was not engaging each other in the world the movie tried to show me. it felt amateurish, or like so much fanservice.

I could use more fanservice if it involves scarlett...

Blade was New Line. Spider-Man belongs to Sony Pictures. Fox owns X-Men movie franchise. And sadly , it ain't dead. Wolverine sequel & X-Men First Class on the way. Blame those fools. Not Marvel Studios. the original Iron Man & Incredible Hulk reboot in 2008 were their first actual films where they had control of it. IM2 came third.

Yup yup. Stark was head of S.H.I.E.L.D. until last year & a public figure with his identity known globally.

If you're referring to Pepper, she was never his fiance. Nor was Bethany.
and it was Rhodey was the one who rescued his from the Wong chu. Tony offered him a job as his personal pilot.
Actually, they just encountered each other in the jungle after he escaped (with help from Ho Yinsen)
Not even the avengers knew who Iron Man was outside the suit.
Don Blake/Thor ,Cap & Jarvis knew from almost the beginning. Then in the late 70's, the Silver Surfer & Tigra found out too (Avengers #215).

Marvel owns ALL of the characters. New Line, Sony and Fox couldn't do anything without Marvel's approval.

X-Men is dead to me. The third movie was completely horrible.

Yeah but when they whored out the film rights to their characters in the 80s & 90s, they lost the right to having the final say on how said characters were portrayed in that particular medium. Why do you think characters like Daredevil, the Fantastic Four & Elektra were totally butchered in those shithouse films. X3 was also the last straw for me in regards to that series... at least until Marvel gets the film rights back. The reason Sony are rushing the Spidey reboot is that if they don't start filming before 2011 hits, those rights also revert back to Marvel & you'd probably see the webslinger included in the upcoming Avengers film. ditto for Fox currently filming the X-Men reboot. They would have lost all rights as well by the new year.

You aren't understanding who owns what...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Studios

Now that we both understand who actually owns the licenses, the fault lies back on Marvel for screwing up the movies.

Stark's finacee was Joanna Nivena. i had to look that up. She was not even in the loop at first.
