Nolan Directing Superman?

Well, sort of. Read on for lots of DC movie goodness.
by Jim Vejvoda

US, February 26, 2010 - Rumor has it that Nolan will direct the reboot of Superman after all. But not that Nolan.

According to IESB, Dark Knight and The Prestige screenwriter Jonah Nolan, brother of TDK helmer Christopher Nolan, is being lined up to direct Superman: The Man of Steel, which IGN recently learned that he's co-writing with David Goyer. Jonah has never directed a feature film before, let alone a tentpole spectacle such as this. But with his brother Chris serving as a "godfather" and producer on the reboot, consider that his (and the studio's) insurance policy.

The juiciest unconfirmed rumor that the site claims to have heard is that Chris Nolan will not only shepherd the next Superman through development, but will also serve a similar role for Green Lantern and The Flash while directing Batman 3. (Think of it as being akin to Jon Favreau's consulting on all of Marvel's upcoming movies leading into The Avengers.) And that his involvement with and vision for all of these DC films will culminate with the Justice League of America movie ... which Chris Nolan would direct after Batman 3. Again, and as IESB points out, this is all unconfirmed rumor right now, but enjoy your nerdgasm anyway.

That Christopher Nolan is the new apple of Warner Bros.' eye is no secret, and was made all the more clear to us Feb. 17 at Warner Home Video's celebration of Clint Eastwood and the release of their new DVD box set Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years. We spoke exclusively with Warner Bros. topper Alan Horn there about the studio's DC plans, including the rumors of Nolan rebooting Superman. Horn equated Nolan with Eastwood, an artist the studio has managed to keep happily in their stable for years.

"Well, I can say the DC library represents a repository of very, very important assets to us and we are, especially as Harry Potter finishes its now decade-long run here at Warner Bros., we're excited about ramping up the DC properties. I thought the first Superman -- Superman Returns -- was actually a pretty good film, and Chris, of course, has done a great job with the two Batman films," Horn said. "So we expect him to be a big part of our future going forward, including with our DC properties. But I guess we think of DC as lining up planes ready to take-off on the runway. A number of properties we're very excited about and you'll be hearing about them shortly. ... I think we're going to be announcing something in the next couple of months."

I don't believe it for a minute. His brother might have a part in all this but not Chris. As fantastic a job as he's done with Batman he really doesn't strike me as much of a comics fan and this doesn't seem like the all encompassing project he'd be interested in.

Don't get me wrong I hope he does. But he strikes me as a ARTeest. One of these guys who thinks he's above certain mediums. So while he dipped his toe in the water with Bats I doubt he'll want to be known as the comicbook movie guy. I don't think it's a question of money but I hope the report is right. His version has'ta be better than that pansy that did the last Supes movie right?....oh please be right.

Well from what I've seen in a documentary, Doing all the back issue research & making Begins turned Nolan into a fanboy. Probably why dude upped his game for TDK.

This Looks Like a Job For ... Lawyers
Warners readies for a legal fight over Superman rights.
by Jim Vejvoda
US, March 2, 2010 - Warner Bros. is bracing for battle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has dumped two different law firms and hired a new lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli, who represented the Walt Disney Company in their litigation over the rights to Winnie the Pooh. Petrocelli also repped the family of murder victim Ronald Goldman in the O.J. Simpson civil suit.

At stake for the studio is nothing less than truth, justice and the character of Superman. The estates of Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster have issued copyright terminations to Warners and their fellow Time Warner company and Superman publisher, DC Comics. The trade reminds us that "a federal judge has ruled that the Siegel family successfully recaptured key rights to the character, including the first two weeks of Superman newspaper comic strips that outline now-familiar elements of the character's mythology."

Furthermore, the Shuster family will exercise their own termination on Superman in 2013 -- effectively taking away the use of the character by either DC or Warner Bros., the trade says, "without a license from the Siegels and Shusters."

The Shusters' attorney, Marc Toberoff, has threatened to sue Warners for recovery of damages if a new Superman film doesn't begin production by 2011. Hence, the studio's recent decision to reboot the franchise with Christopher Nolan "godfathering" it and David Goyer scripting

Yeesh! That's a shame for everyone. I understand the families wanting some part of the profits but to hold the character up is kinda tarnishing the legend of their fathers/grandfathers.

I don't get it. This Levi dude looks just like a shorter Routh. Might as well keep Routh as Supes.

The man of steel rumor mill continues.
US, July 15, 2010
Source: IGN.com
If you've been out of the loop on the upcoming Superman movie, the latest rumors floating around the net are that Jonah Nolan, the lil bro of Christopher Nolan, will be directing and that Chuck star Zachary Levi has auditioned for the lead.

Moviehole is reporting that their contact within Warner Bros. has responded to some of these rumors. According to their unnamed source, "Jonathan Nolan is not onboard yet, but it looks like he will get the job. Jonah wants to direct, Chris wants to land him that gig, WB doesn't want to upset Chris. That said, it is far from a done deal - but with Chris and Emma producing, the odds are with Jonah..."

As for who will play the man of steel, the Zachary Levi rumor seems to be more ambiguous. "Also, it is a TV star that they're looking at for the lead - but, despite what that article says, I don't believe anyone has actually tested."

However, the most interesting details from the Moviehole exclusive were about the nature of the film itself. "This Superman is neither a reboot or a sequel. It's just a Superman film. The basic elements of the storyline are: BIG action, BIG set-pieces, witty dialogue, playful romance, a light-hearted feel good mood juxtaposed with derring-do and danger, top-notch cast, epic feel, sci-fi background (sounds a little like Donner, right?) BUT with some sort of huge twist on the legend."

Feel free to take this with a grain of salt as the identity of the source was not revealed, but the last line about a twist on the Superman saga begs for some serious speculation.

I don't know about anyone else, but as far as Superman goes, Routh does it for me...He's the right mix of goofy and unassuming, but totally the dude when he has on the suit...A change in the lead actor is not necessary from my POV...What we do fucking need, is a new Lois Lane...

Odette Yustman, anyone..?
