This poll got me curious: should the U.S. make English its national language?

Yes it should. English is the most popular language after America "Americanized" all the other countries of the world. Everyone here already speaks it so just make it official. I don't know if it would promote national unity, but we should still make it our national language

English is the answer to a question that shouldn't been asked in the first place.

Wow, I really don't want to seem like an asshole, but...Why in the fuck isn't it already the national language..? You know I saw a glimpse of this in the news, and was certain that they must have been talking about another country...Bottom line..? Everyone here should know English...Everyone that comes here should know the language...I wouldn't even visit a place where the didn't speak English and not study the language...
I really, really thought English was already our national language...

It's been knocked around from time to time but up to this point every time it was being seriously discussed the Hispanic Lobby knocked it down. I definitely believe English should be the National Language, not just the "Unifying Language". It has been the de-facto NL since the inception of this country that started with the original 13. It's always been "understood" that English is the language you "should know" if you want to get anywhere in this country.
We have immigrants from all over the world and the only ones that seem to have a problem with learning our language are the ones that come from the South of us either legally or illegally. WTF is up with that? If Russians can learn English, if Chinese can learn English, if the Germans and the French can learn English, WHY THE FUCK can't the Mexican's and the Cubans?!?

I watched the Senate debate this amendment on CSPAN a couple days ago and the opponents arguments against
it were absurd. The fact that a body can't agree on something as obvious as this shows the sad truth about politics
today. It's funny that the bill require immigrants to learn english before getting citizenship and the supporters of said
bill find the amendment racist.

I thought it was your national language, too. I just found out recently that you guys don't have one. I thought that was quite dumb.

And like DaddyJ said, this is why I have never bothered with politics up until you guys and this forum came about...That seems like the dumbest fucking shit EVER...It seems so pointless to have gov't, and to make things worse, look at the damn poll...It should be overwhelming, yet its 60/40 pretty much....We can't even decide if whether or not we want to all speak the damn same language...Unbelieveable...How do they expect gov't to succeed...If Mr. Juarez can open up a fucking store, and do whatever the hell he wants en Espanol, and cops can't ask him a question cause he habla no Ingles, and that's his right...
