Ok, Is Golf a sport or a game?
I contend that Golf is a leisure activity and not a sport for athletes. All last week I heard about Tiger Woods and weather or not he was among the greatest athletes of all time. Golf is a challenging game to be sure, but not unlike any other mind challenging game, Chess as an example.
Golf does take a certain amount of movement, but no matter what your body type is, you can play the game. Fat, old, young, skinny, it doesn†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬‚¢¢¢¬…¾
‚¢t matter. Any thoughts?

I think Golf is more of a game than a sport....but I think in no way does that take away from how great Tiger is...
Sport...Athlete...you can use whatever terms you want to......Tiger Woods is better and more dominant in his respective field than nearly anyone to play their own...
Are you taking issue with what they're saying about Tiger....or what they're saying about Golf?

Tiger is a great athlete. But, he is more along the lines of athletic than a true athlete. Golf requires little to no physical ability, it is all about knowledge. I mean Bobby Fisher was the most dominatnig chess player that I can remember, but he isn't an athlete.
Tiger plays the game better than anyone, but it is a game. A game isn't a sport, and a game player isn't an athlete.

There is a certain physicality to Golf, which makes it different...You are exposed to elements and must walk the course...That makes it a little different than chess and backgammon...And for the record, a sport and a game by definition are both things of lesiure...
And unless you've experieced the mental pressure of playing chess on an international level, I'd hold off on judging them...What the mind percieves the body will make real, there's no real tangible way to cross reference the two that I know of...But it would indeed be interesting...
We have had a similar disucssion before have we not L.G...? It would seem to him, that baseball players aren't athletes, when through discussion, it was revealed that MANY baseball players were stars in other sports before playing baseball...For instance, Tony Gwynn is the all time assists leader at San Diego State...And consequently one of the best hitters, if not the best, the game has ever seen...
I think it's wrong to assume that because Tiger chose to play golf, he's not an athlete...If physical prowness were all it took to be an athlete, then you'd have an argument...Tiger has every aspect that I can think of that could easily have made him a threat in any sport...

I admire Tiger for what he can do on the course because I know I can't do that. But, to say he is one of the greatest athletes of all time is pushing it. I mean with enough practice, anyone can be good at Golf. It is a game of elements and knowledge, not physical prowess. I am sure Chess is hard... I play checkers because I am just that simple minded sometimes. But, Golf is not an "athletic" sport. Tennis is... hockey is... baseball, football, basketball, and even soccer are athletic sports. But, you don't really need any "skill" to play golf... just got to know how to swing the club correctly really.

Athlete : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina
QUOTE(ruffriders23)I mean with enough practice, anyone can be good at Golf
I'd give you that statement as a partial point, and it still be off the mark...Tiger Woods is not good at golf...He is phenomenal...
QUOTE(ruffriders23)But, Golf is not an "athletic" sport. Tennis is... hockey is... baseball, football, basketball, and even soccer are athletic sports.
Still, I have not read anything you've written or said that explains why you feel golf isn't an 'athletic' sport...For instance...What if a boxer says that boxing is a sport, based on his experience of physical exertion and punishment..? Could a boxer say that tennis would only be a sport if they were running trying to hit the ball while simultaneously avoiding their opponet trying to hit them in the fucking face with their racket..? No, of course not...
QUOTE(ruffriders23)But, you don't really need any "skill" to play golf
Could have fooled the fuck outta me...I wonder why tiger makes millions of dollars then...With all the time in the day you have, you should take up golf, make a couple mil easy, I mean, it don't take not skill, so you could pull it off easy, and then come back to AF and donate a few bucks..?

Golf is not athletic because there is no sense of strength, agility, and stamina. Strength in the smallest amound, but the clubs/balls do more of the work now days. Agility... not a speck of agility needed. Stamina... ok, so you have to carry the clubs (except that one guy who got to use the cart), but wait, the caddy carries them. So, the caddy is more atheltic than the golfer.
The skill in golf lies in the area of learning how to hit the ball correctly. Don't misunderstand me, there is a skill involved in Golf, but there is one for bumbs dumpster diving too. I just think an athlete will possess strength, agility, and stamina. Is Tiger tops at his game.. you bet. The guy is amazing on the golf course. But, could he be more athletic than say a NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, or NHL player.... I would have to say no. Golf requires no atheltic ability to play.

So ruff, are you saying any person can hit a golf ball 400 yards..?

ok... if you have the same clubs and the same balls and say a month to get some real top notch instructions... then I would venture to say that they could hit up there with the pros.
Now, with any game, you are going to have the good players and the better players. Tiger is the better player and the rest are the good players. I know when I went to the range at Ft. Carson I was lobbing them out there at the 300 yard marker and thats with range clubs and balls. Give me Tiger clubs and balls, I bet I got for atleast... 325. And, thats with no practice or instruction.

Whoa buddy... you are so out of your fucking element here. You need to leave the sports section and never come back. Honestly, if golf is so easy, why don't you go up against Woods and embarrass his ass...
You have no idea the amount of skill that is required in golf. It's not just about "hitting the ball correctly."

And even soccer? Have you even ever watched a soccer game before?
