Last weekend, TGS was held in... well... err... Tokyo.

Keen to see how Sony would handle the event, I followed it each and every day.

I must say: I am even more impressed with Sony's machine now, then I was before. Its power outdid my expectations. MS also had a few good titles, but - even though second gen and although gameplay counts instead of graphics - they were not able to compete with PS3's strong technical performance.

what are you opinions?

My opinions are it is hard to figure out what of their showings are going to be translated out of the Japanese market. and being in the states, most of the games they put forward look on par with next gen. What did you see that truly blew you away?

Resistance (actual play) looks sad, by the way. in particular, the muzzle flare is pitiful, the movement of your character is far too fluid (like he's on a hoverboard, not in bootstraps), and the levels the showed offered no real innovation on the first person shooter. if this is the kind of game you like, you might like it, but this is one of my least favorite games. If i wanted to hunt and shoot people, i'd use a paintball range.

lair showed some footage they said was in-game, but some of the most impressive turned out to be static images,.. and then they said they were load screens! bad sony. typical sony.

On the other hand, MS announced some great news for 360 crowd:

Peter Jackson is doing two games exclusive to the 360, one including a Halo Wars strategy game. He is also forming wingnut studios, which will be exclusive to MS. The trailer looks like Starcraft on steroids.

Ubi showed Assassin's Creed on the Xbox360, and this is friggin great! the in game screens were very impressive!

Rockstar announced several (at least 5) hours of additional content for GTA4 will be exclusively available through XBOX live as a pay for play download, so if you wanna get your Grand Theft on, full blast, 360 is your machine...

HALO 4 + HALO WARS + Assassin's Creed + GTA4 content + 1080p HDMI update + new quality roleplaying games from pioneers and atriarchs of the genre.

You consider this a poor offering?

though I gotta say, the wii had some suprising stuff as well, like the "mii" feature, that lets you develop an in-game avatar to be your player controlled character in games. that's a great idea!

as far as PS3, warhawk looks to be the best game on the system due to immense multi-player.

aj. yeah i do. but I'll reply to raum's post answering your question.

QUOTE(raum)What did you see that truly blew you away?

well you got ridge racer 7, which really looks a lot better than v6 on x360. i am confident gameplay will be the same, but hell even the ps1 game with its primitive graphics was and is never dull to play. so presentation is which counts. v7 does show cars and scenery which I have not seen x360 do (yet) and this is a ps3 gen-1 game... feast on these:

(2)
you got Motor Storm, which was critisized after E3 2005 (!) because of allegidly showing pre-rendered footage instead of in-game screens. A supposition I was holding to as well. Apparently, the PS3 does hold up to its former pre-rendered assumptions so that Motorstorm gets very close if not surpasses the E3 2005 promises... in real time.

this is in-game (apparently):

Lair. raum said the most impressive images were load screens. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> care to link to the source you got that from, because I heard different information from various sources. One of which is ps3.ign.com which has a developer interview (which - okay - does want to sell, but still). They said:
It was footage directly grabbed out of the engine, running in real-time on the PS3, and with game assets. In levels that have our rain engine active the dragons are still as shiny as they were in that trailer. The teaser deliberately didn't show the hero or any other bits of the world of Lair because we wanted to introduce our technology, and what is possible on the PS3 in real-time.

That demo, as nice as it looked, only used a very primitive lighting system. Nowadays we have a full atmospheric light simulation running on RSX, so if we re-did the demo it would look considerably better. And then there is of course the dragon art: The Dark Dragon looks quite different these days because it evolved visually, but the Flame Dragon is almost unchanged in the game.

and the screens show so:

now. I agree, raum, there are still ???, so time will tell. but it looks good from the comments I read.

raum disses Resistance. hmmm. funny for one who likes 360, since 360 has loads and loads and loads of FPS's which I personally really really prefer to be playing on PC's with mouse and keyboards. but well, since it seems to be a real issue with xbox addicts, resistance looks way good. I think I would never ever buy an FPS for consoles, but still Halo - although I only played it on PC - really much didn't cut it for me. But, if you want to compare, I can not imagine an x360 gen-1 game looking as amazing as this:

(5)
and Heavenly Sword... let the images speak for themselves...

hmm yummy. well. anyhows. I am sold to ps3. I will not buy it at $600 though. I got a family to raise and this indeed is steep. yet. paying that price I would really know what I am getting: the most advanced, next gen console there is. Way ahead of its competition. Hell, it even has a Blu-Ray drive while I am - at this moment - still happy with DVD. It got cell, bluetooth (which never was my favorite either), WiFi and some flash-disk support. Oh... and HDMI v1.3 at 1080p. My telly needs upgrading as well... This really is a platform for the future...

I could care less about racing games, and first person shooters. The only thing I saw for PS3 that looked like I must have it is Assassin's Creed, and now that is coming to the 360 as well, and UBI demos of the game at XO6 were on the 360, so it is ready and being tested.

i think heavenly sword might be interesting, but doesn't look to have much new. new graphics, same story.

Assassin's Creed is like Grand Theft Jerusalem, and so much more. intuitive controls, for hands and feet, climb anything that sticks out more than 2 inches, that is unparalleled freedom of movement. Also, the crowd goes apeshit when you kill someone, and will either help you escape (if you are working for common good) or help make your capture (if you are not). you can form allegiences, you can make personal enemies.

the people who made the Prince of Persia games had something special, and they are the masterminds behind this. So expect twists...

For one, the Grand Theft Jerusalem part of it is actually a scan of your genetic memory, in this trilogy of games.

I look at heavenly sword, and I see God of War, and I thought GOW was better. and in fact, most critics who have seen the insides of the game agree, and thus just call it Goddess of War.

Metal Storm, stupid name, at least a race game with some interest.

Lair just doesn't look right, the dragons look weird to me, no neck?

i will give Blue Dragon a look as a RPG, because dragons are undeniably cool, and also for my real time dragon fix, Eragon will be out before Christmas on the 360 in conjuction with the movie, and playing Sephira (the dragon in the book) will be awesome, and it is confirmed on some stages you play Seph, and there will be tons of replayability for hidden content. http://xboxmovies.teamxbox.com/xbox-360 ... S-Trailer/

may not look as clear as lair, but looks more than fun enough for me to at least give it a shot. besides, GREAT STORY!!

PS3 just doesn't seem to offer anything new to a person who has a 360, except a tilt axis controller most of us don't want. (and MS is working on a more joytick based version of this) and a 1080p resolution most homes can't support, yourself included.

besides xbox 360 gets 1080p update this spring, and I CAN USE support it!

but lemme get this straight, you are saying the PS3 is better, even though you can't afford one, and can't even support the superior resolution if you could?

so, clearly in terms of which is better, you are not answering the question of which is better for YOU, when, as a consumer, that is exactly the most important selling point for me. And as far as i can tell, the CELL processor is nto all its cracked up to be in terms of technical advantage.

and the next is is the PS3 worth the additional 300 dollars, and that is a HUGE "no way jose."

Not when such great games as Fable2, Crackdown, Vampire's Rain, Rainbow Six Vegas, Marvel Ultimates, exclusive GTA4 playable content, and PETER JACKSON games are coming out on a system I already own. as it is, if I hadn't the trade in credit, I wouldn't have a xbox live until Fable2 comes out... but I figured what the hey, it was less than 60 bucks, which is what most people pay for a game!
