Military Hones a New Strategy on Insurgency
By MICHAEL R. GORDON
Published: October 5, 2006
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 -- The United States Army and Marines are finishing work on a new counterinsurgency doctrine that draws on the hard-learned lessons from Iraq and makes the welfare and protection of civilians a bedrock element of military strategy.
The doctrine warns against some of the practices used early in the war, when the military operated without an effective counterinsurgency playbook.
It cautions against overly aggressive raids and mistreatment of detainees. Instead it emphasizes the importance of safeguarding civilians and restoring essential services, and the rapid development of local security forces...
The new doctrine is part of a broader effort to change the culture of a military that has long promoted the virtues of using firepower and battlefield maneuvers in swift, decisive operations against a conventional enemy.

fucking amazing!
I have been preaching 6 out of 9 of these tactics for ages. incredible that the US military actually caught up. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />
i remember messaging (some of) these to an American who was going to join some private security firm for a mission in Iraq in 2004. his totally expected answer was: fuck off you European coward. WE are the boss there; WE liberated them; THEY should be grateful. If they are not, they can meet my buddy glock here.
my thoughts to that were: oh yeah this is definately going the right way. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Better late than never. I'm afraid the damage is done. It just seems that those who are actually there...might have been suggesting this a long while ago. This "kick ass-take names" sounds more like a strategy put forth by suits rather than those doing the name-taking.
