I was recently pulled over and given a ticket...Living in the south, being a black man, its easy to assume that if I'm pulled over by a white guy w/a buzz cut that I've been profiled...So, being that there are some white guys here that I like a ton, maybe you can help me decide if I'm overreacting...

I was going down US Highway 25, going 65 MPH, speed limit 65 MPH...I had the cruise set...It was daylight out...I had not been drinking, I had on my seatbelt...I passed by a police officer who was riding in the fast lane going below the speed limit, rather a highway patrolman who was going approximately 60-63 MPH...

Approximately 3-5 minutes after passing the officer, he threw the lights on me and gave me a ticket...

Using the details I've given you, plus you can ask questions if you want, what could I have been giving a ticket for...?

I would say passing in the travel lane AND for that, you ought to be ashamed of yourself!

Actually, and unfortunately, you got fucked!

dude you shoulda went all out judge judy and yelled at the sucker. you went the speed limit and if the whore wants to be a super whore, he'd give you a ticket.

since this was presented like a riddle or a mystery, like a scooby-doo episode, i'm going to say JINKYS! and start throwing out theories.

JINKIES:...
1. Were you naked?
2. Was the cop german?
3. Do you like apples?

Honestly I think you shouldn't have passed the cop at all. Whenever I see a cop on the road my sack jumps to my lungs.

Man, I'd take that ticket to court and contest it. Three possibilities from that course of action: 1) they throw the ticket out, 2) they reduce the ticket, or 3) they leave it as is. Don't know how things run there in MS, but here in FL, the first two are the most likely.

I was recently in an accident that was totally my fault and I'm still going to go to court to see if I can get things at least reduced. Can't hurt.

make an effort to be ready to pay the ticket.
contest the ticket at the court.

if the cop doesn't show up, you generally get the benefit of the doubt.

but keep in mind, if a cop is going 63, the speed limit is 63. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

to be honest, the cop prolly was going 65, and he figured you were playing gimme 2, where people go 67 in a 65, or whatnot. that is why you always ALWAYS let the cop dart off before you slide by him. then he ran your plates, saw some stuff on you, and pulled you over to make quota, figuring you'd not go to court on it., and even if you do, you just might have to pay anyways.

also in general, the left lane is the pacing lane, not the right. what does the ticket say?

i grew up to your left, as you know, so I ain't gonna say it wasn't in the slightest racially motivated, but to be honest, if he was out on that trip, specially in Mississippi, there are better places to go hunting than the US-25. he could go by the 50, and prolly hit a person going 80 with a feedbag of weed.

Along the lines of what Raum said, the speedometer in the cops car could have been a couple mph off and so he thought he was going 65 which meant that you were going faster. But here in WA and OR they don't ticket you for going 2 mph over or whatever. I think they are required to write what speed he "clocked" you at. What did it say?

Ok now IF you were going the actual speed limit then the only thing you could have been charged for would be either:

a) passing on the right (and yes this is a dickhead move on the cop if he actually gave you this ticket)

OR

/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> expired plates

Now if it's option A then i see it as entrapment. The cop can pretty much drive 10mph slower and everybody who passes him on the right can get a ticket. So if he's purposely driving slower in the extreme left lane and just pulling people over that's fully effed....

And then lets not forget that in your case you could have just been pulled over simply for DWB.

Guys, you all misread the thread...Cept Mandizzle... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />

I thought about not passing him, but in my eyes, this would have made me even more guilty, as he obviously was looking for work that day...

I didn't get a speeding ticket, that's what the fucked up part...I got a ticket for an expired tag...

Now, this is where the profiling part comes in...I don't know where you guys live, but renewing your tag is a small ass sticker, approximately an inch wide...

Driving 65 MPH, how the fuck do you spot that..? Even if its a different color..? Ever since I got the ticket, I've been trying to see just how long you have to bee paying attention to notice the tag...When he got to the window, he had called in my plates and everything...

The fuck for..? What about me, had him tailing me so tight, that he would have bothered to try and give me to a fucking ticket for no tag, which I was on my way to get...In fact, I got the tag the very next day, which I was going to do anyway...

Even after I told him that the car was being repaired, hence why I had not driven to get the tag in the first place, he STILL wrote the ticket and fucking lied and said I wouldn't have to pay it, that the judge would dismiss it...

What I'm going to do is just contest it in court, take an Affidavit to the justice court w/me just have them dismiss it...A total fucking ball break for me...

And don't you just love cops..?

That sucks man.. I know because the exact same thing has happened to me before.

Even here the registration sticker is tiny and is in the top right corner of the rear license plate. However here they are colour coded so they can spot out expired ones a little bit easier.

I agree it was a dick move on his part but as I said i've been pulled over for the same thing. He just told me to go do it but he still had to write me a ticket. I went to court, he never showed up, it got thrown out. All in all a big waste of time.

Well, since he was following you (you said he didn't turn on his lights until about 3 minutes after you passed him), wouldn't it be safe to say he was checking out your sticker?
