Picture of the ps3's motherboard:
And one of the 360's first:
even though the picture quality of the 360 is a lot worse than the one of ps3, it is easy to conclude: "uhm. kinda messy that 360 one."

Haha, yeh, I was going to say that same thing..
PS3's board is much cleaner, also looks like it didn't come out of a Chinese sweatshop.. lol
Not so sure about that chip on the left of the PS3 board, though..
Looks kinda burnt out..

haha. yeah.
now that you mention it, everything on the 360 board looks burned. Then again, maybe it was one of these which actually were. lol
btw, that chip you pointed out is the ps2's chipset in its entirety (Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesiser)
wonder what it is for (except for backwards compatibility) /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />

Brains, you are so quick to call into question all kinds of things,.. but not that 360 motherboard pic.
I had a hell of a time finding any that were reliable... but these are from people who completely mod your console, and they show you how as well.
THIS is a 360 motherboard. You showed a 360 board with all the connections. and PS3 board that miraculously needs no wires fans or anything. Much cleaner pic of the 360:

thanks. that is a better comparison indeed. I took it from some xbox fansite, which has pictures of all the versions. The latter are cleaner as well, which is logical. Hell CELL and RSX might get integrated eventually like they did GS and EE.
back on-topic: ps3 still looks a lot cleaner, even with your better picture of the totally bare 360 motherboard.

as a visual... yes.
but i gotta wonder. see, the 360 I can see where stuff is and why. heat content was a big concern, and yes at first there were some bugs,.. but the board was designed with that in mind. see how the fans have to blow across the capacitors into the system. Good idea!
and (on the 360) some of the crucial chipware is on the back side of the ouside wall along the perimeter of where the physical drive would be,.. so it minimizes heat exposure.
now, look (and i say this from logisitics stance) at the PS3 board you show. it loads on the right, and you can see the USB ports, so it is easy to see what you are looking at. furthermore, and naturally, the embedded power supply brick of the ps3 (which is the single most bad idea about the console, in my opinion) , it's pretty much going to put 380 watts over the top of that chipset that centers on the chip that says "Mavell SCE-1." I am not sure that is a good idea, but I don't know what that chip is for. and on a board that is supposed to perform like that one, i'd like to see a few more capacitors. how will a fan hit them all spread out in twos and threes?
for clarity:
I honestly don't want anyone I know to lose a console due to heat. I wish no harm on sony and I am not against getting a ps3 in time when and if it is more reasonable for me to do so,.. but I will voice my concerns. and I think microsoft is doing well by me as a gamer... and giving me a great entertainment for my 45 cents an hour that energy, console RETAIL price, games, and peripheries has cost me.

the "Marvel" chip is for gigabit ethernet; not a lot more, so i can't imagine a lot of stress on it.
heat is a concern for all pc manufacturers! and although ps3 power birck is internal: up to now - two days after the US's launch and more than a week after the JP one - no reports whatsoever about ps3's malfunctioning have hit the web (except demo pods). it looks like very well done engineering or do you doubt at this moment? (and again: I also expect some kind of hardware problem... if not, hats of to Sony! respect! no?!
why do you want to see more capacitors? if the board works, it works. I also seem to remember capacitors come in all forms and sizes. The traditional one being the cylinders you see so much on the 360's board... but I might be mistaking.

Actually raum, there are a fair amount of capacitors on that board..
However, the nice 'big' ones are found on the power supply, rather than the board itself - where the main power switching is found..
*don't hurt me like Brains.. lol*
