My brother was asking about processors yesterday, I told him I'd look into it. All I could name off the top of my head is Pentium. lol I have and AMD Anthlon, but considering I've had nothing but problems with this piece of shit... lol

Anyway. He uses his computer for just general stuff... downloading songs, checking websites, using MSN etc.

never saw an athalon work the way they were supposed to... damn shame.

My intel/pentium relationship is about 12 years old, and stable.

have him buy a ps3: good for downloading songs, checking websites, using msn - what is the linux client again?!, it plays Blu-Ray, has wifi, an upgradeable HDD, recognizes keyboards, mice and headsets, there's bluetooth and card readers. It is fitted with the fastest processor known to men and has quite a capable graphics chip as well. I forgot USB's a plenty, gigabit ethernet and HDMI1.3.

For only $600, that is a damn steal!

The best chips in the world, pound for pound, are the Intel Core Duo's...I have one in my new machine, and will NEVER use an Athlon again..This thing is awesome, I am surfing the net w/Firefox, playing my PS2 in a window, defragging 2 of my external drives, and have a shitload of other apps running, burning DVD's, and I haven't seen my CPU usage dip over 50% yet...

If you can get a machine that has a Core Duo, or a Core 2, get it...They're worth every penny...I posted a review to the chip I have in my PC in my Dynamic Duo thread, take a look at the numbers...

Heh, for the moment, go with the Core Duo 2, not one..
If you're gonna get a normal Core Duo, you may as well go with AMD and get an Opteron..

Don't know what you did to prevent them from working. I've had a 1GHz Athlon Thunderbird, Athlon XP 1600, Athlon XP 1700, Athlon XP 2400 and now a Opteron 165. They have all worked without a problem. I also had a 2.8C P4 Northwood that worked without a problem too. I plan on getting a Pentium Core 2 Duo pretty soon. I have nothing negative to say about either company.

I've predominantly used AMD Athlon chips for a while b/c they were cheap and I could overclock the hell out of them (they were fast enough already pretty much). Never had any probs with them.

Now with Intel Core 2 stuff out there is no competition from AMD. The latest Intel quad core chips now are the objects of my affection. Quad core + SLI 8800 = next upgrade /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But seriously, if the computer is used for general stuff and not games or high end 3D work, the cheapest chip from anybody will be more than powerfull enough. An old Pentium III sub 1Ghz chip would even do the trick /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

zaphodz, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get a quad core from Intel..

I don't know about AM2 chips.
What I *CAN* tell you tho, is that I can match AYHJA's tasks *AND* add Folding@home with an athlon 4400 /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

You know, the one thing that Intel was always lacking, was the supporting chipsets /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
Ever since AMD teamed with nvidia, the chipsets are faster, better, steadier.
The nforce controllers kick major behinds.

I from what I've heard, Dual AMD so far, kick Core Duo.

Now now, I'll side with WAI in the quad issue. Sorry intel fans butt(SHAKIRAAAAA!!!!!!!!!) lately (like the last 4-5 years) the leader in designing has been AMD. Intel is always rushing behind, being second. That being said, I urge you to look up the outstanding technology of Quad Cores and -just to save yourself from the trouble- don't even mind about looking up Intel's steps /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Oh, and by the way, I've been using Intel for too many years, until AMD FINALLY proved that they were worth my money.

That's what I told him to get. I told him he could go with raum's suggestion (Intel/Pentium) if he's looking to safe a few bucks, otherwise go for the Core Duo.
