Houston-area rapist preys on men


HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- A rapist who preys on young men has struck five times in the Houston area since mid-September, and police said Monday there may be even more victims who are too ashamed to come forward.

The rapist typically stalks, robs and sexually assaults his victims at gunpoint, apparently choosing them at random and attacking them near or inside their homes, police said. The most recent attack was November 30.

"I wish we had a link between the victims, because we might have a better chance of catching him," said Lt. Richard Whitaker of the police department in Baytown, where two of the attacks took place. "We don't have any affirmative links at all."

He said some victims may be reluctant to come forward because of their ages and "a pride thing" that makes men more reluctant to acknowledge being the victim of a sex crime.

Investigators believe rape is the motive, even though some victims were robbed. DNA testing is under way in an effort to identify the attacker.

In some cases, the attacker approached his victim outside their home. Other times, he broke into the home.

"I think he just sees one that he prefers, and then he begins to follow them and gather information, finding out where they live and watching their house," Whitaker said.

Victims have described the attacker as a clean-shaven black man, 18 to 21 years old, 5-foot-6 to 6 feet tall, with a shaved head.

The victims have all been men in their late teens.

The city of Houston seems to alway's have issue's. I remember a while back, they had these gang bangers driving around with their headlights off. If anyone flashed their lights at them to let them know their lights were off, they would turn around and follow them and then kill them.

Damn, sounds like a fucked urban legend, but be damned if they chase me down and not get bucked on, lol...

After a little research, I found out that your are correct. I guess you can't believe everything you hear on the local news.


Flashing Your Headlights At An Oncoming Car Could Get You Killed by a Gang Member-Fiction!


Summary of the eRumor
A warning from law enforcement that if you see a car driving without headlights, don't flash your headlights or in any other way try to signal the car about the lack of lights. The reason is that gang members, as a part of their initiation, are driving intentionally without headlights then are required to chase and shoot at anyone who tries to tell them the headlights are off.
One version that came up in 2005 says that September 23 and 24 are "blood initiation weekend" and that police departments across the nation are being warned to stay on the alert. The message claims to be from the DARE program.


The Truth

This has circulated for more than 20 years, but there is no truth to it.

The folks at the DARE program deny that this email ever originated with them and on their website at www.dare.com they brand the warning as a hoax. The DARE program works among kids who are at risk to become gang members. They describe themselves as giving kids "the life skills they need to avoid involvement with drugs, gangs, and violence.

Versions of the hoax email vary. Some include a specific city where this is alleged to be happening and quote a police officer in that city. Some refer to a particular weekend in which gang members will be doing their annual initiations such as around Halloween.

There have been seasons when this eRumor has become so widely circulated that even police departments and government agencies have posted it without realizing it is not true or have had so many citizen reports of the hoax that they've braced themselves for dealing with the rumor itself. According to an article in the Houston Chronicle in September of 2003, officers in Houston and Harris county were on alert one weekend because of warnings of the gang/headlight initiation. In 1993 police in Wichita, Kansas, thought they had a shooting that may have been prompted by the the rumor. A woman was shot at after flashing her lights at a pickup that was driving without lights. No one was injured and there was no indication that it was gang activity. There have been other incidents of road rage that might loosely fit what is described in the eRumor, we have never found any documentation of this being a gang ritual or a valid warning from a law enforcement agency.

THE GANG MEMBER IS NOW REQUIRED TO CHASE THE CAR AND SHOOT AT OR INTO THE CAR IN ORDER TO COMPLETE HIS INITIATION REQUIREMENTS.

Police officers working with the DARE program has issued this warning:
If you are driving after dark and see an on-coming car with no headlights on, DO NOT FLASH YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM! This is a common Bloods gang member "initiation game" that goes like this:

The new gang member under initiation drives along with no headlights, and the first car to flash their headlights at him is now his "target". He is now required to turn around and chase that car, then shoot and kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his initiation requirements.

Police Depts across the nation are being warned that September 23rd and 24th is the "blood" initiation weekend. Their intent is to have all the new bloods nationwide drive around on Friday and Saturday nights with their headlights off. In order to be accepted into the gang, they have to shoot and kill all individuals in the first auto that does a courtesy flash to warn them that their lights are off. Make sure you share this information with all the drivers in your family!
