US Embassy in Greece Hit by RPG

An explosion shook the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, early Friday morning, causing no injuries, police said.

A rocket-propelled grenade launched from across the street in busy downtown Athens could have been the cause, Greek counterterrorism authorities told CNN.

Counterterrorism and embassy security officials immediately began inspecting the area and nearby buildings.

The only damage captured by television cameras after the attack was a window blown out on an upper floor. Embassy staff members said they saw scattered glass on the floor.

The explosion occurred close to the ambassador's office, but police said the ambassador was in a safe location.

Police cordoned off streets around the embassy after the blast, causing a near-standstill of traffic during morning rush hour.

The embassy in Athens was the target of a rocket-propelled grenade attack on February 15, 1996. That attack caused minor damage.

what can I say really?! Some people are fed up with the US, also in Greece. What I think is most strange is that this is the second one and that the first one was back in 96...

I didn't want to post here before I had something to post, except the original post.

So far, the facts:

a) pictures here

c) Thankfully no victims/injuries

d) the damage done is minor

e) Ries had the best possible responce to the whole thing (compared to his predessesors like Thomas Miller who would have just been a complete ASS(no shakira this time) ). He even said that the embassy will work normally today (to the extend they can).

f) The origin of the weapon is CLAIMED (not certain yet) to be East German.

Something here doesn't match. An rpg is meant to explode on the target. There's no explosion/fire/any more glasses broken, like you can see. There was no bomb squad in the place to pick up the ... unexploded rpg.

There's a little bit of a confussion in the information flow here and the only BIG thing in the whole deal is that once again, Greece became the center of the global media for a bad reason and for something that is really ... I don't know how to call this. Confusing? Not clear? Mysty ? Dunno. All I know is that some of the stuff that's being said isn't adding up.

So Brains, you feel that the attack was justified in some way..? You didn't type, "Some people are fed up with the US" as a cop out to launch an RPG into an embassy..?

Please tell me what reasoning you have for not being "outraged" that the civil US Embassy in Athens was struck (thankfully no one was hurt) with a MILITARY WEAPON. You say "fed up with the US". What kind of stereotyping is that? How many people in Athens Embassy have pounded ground in Iraq in the last five years? None. That "shrug" you gave here is as dismissive as a blanket statement against Muslims.

Do you know how many Americans HATE what the UN has done to our country? Would we just "shrug" if a RPG load bounced off the building? An RPG is not a stone. A person fed up would not just be able to land a RPG with an acasual impulse. No, a person who is sitting on a Russian RPG has (or has had) funding and contacts. And to attack an Embassy, the attacker is a chickenshit.

Since 1946, the US has given over 11 Billion dollars to Greece in social services and federal funding, provided through this Embassy. Exports to the US also account for over 4% of the their trade industry. Our embassy there has provided neccesary social services and specialized funding for special needs citizens and American vistiors visiting Greece for over half a Century, and has allowed over 3 million Grecian citizens to meet with American relatives through granting visitation to and from Greece.

there is a lot we should condemn. And we have. Iraq is one. Never before did the world experience such massive protest against it before it started... how many millions were on the street worldwide?! Did the US listen?! No it did not. That is deplorable as well.

There is a world of difference between a bad translation and an actual statement in a language we both know or do you accept "where mistakes have been made", as an honest excuse? I do not. Bush SHOULD say "the US has made the mistake of invading Iraq against the will of the majority of other countries. It now needs to admit its stupid mistake and calls on the world for help resolving it. We are willing to talk to whomever and work out the differences... and yadda yadda yadda."
