Nomura cut its target for PS3 game units shipped during the period to 4.5 million from 6 million, citing poor sales over the holiday season in North America. Yup, the console is tanking 25% before fiscal year end.
Sony said last week it had shipped 1 million consoles in the U.S. in 2006, but it sold only about 470,000 in Japan according to data released by computer game publisher Enterbrain Inc. This put it well below its global goal of 2 million for the year. The Ninetendo Wii outsold the PS3 2:1 in Japan.
The unit is due to be released in Europe sometime in March, and this will be crucial to their stance this quarter, with no heavy hitting exclusive games lined up until a little later in the year. The exclusivity of those games remains a question as developers struggle to manage costs against potential lack of sales due to the market. Even more developers eye other consoles, including the XBox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and even the Ps2, which still has the market share for non-portable consoles. Developers are starting to see that high-end graphics will not make or break a game, as the Wii continues to outsell the PS3 in all markets, despite the obvious graphic superiorty of the PS3. Futher more, the cost of the Wii games average higher than the PS2, and sell rate on even the lowest rated games compares to the cream of the PS3 crop.
In its report Monday, Nomura also cut its PS3 sales forecast for next fiscal year to 10 million from 16 million next fiscal year and to 11 million from 18 million for the following year.
This puts it at a downturn over the next two years, and the trend indicates despite a increase in sales of 10%, Sony will continue to miss their goal by 33.79% for the generation, unless some serious progress is made.
Nomura maintained its neutral rating on Sony shares, saying it expected strong large-screen television sales in North America and continued strong performance from the Sony Ericsson cellphone joint venture.

And they still don't have any new games for the damn thing...
