Could black holes be portals to other universes?

newscientist.com -- The objects scientists think are black holes could instead be wormholes leading to other universes, a new study says. If so, it would help resolve a quantum conundrum known as the black hole information paradox, but critics say it would also raise new problems, such as how the wormholes would form in the first place.

Wormholes are warps in the fabric of space-time that connect one place to another. If you imagine the universe as a two-dimensional sheet, you can picture a wormhole as a "throat" connecting our sheet to another one. In this scenario, the other sheet could be a universe of its own, with its own stars, galaxies and planets.

I say we throw criminals on death row in them, and offer them freedom if they survive.

that'll solve two problems at once...

lol....how do you purpose to throw a criminal into a black hole?

lmao @ raum.

I'm going to start building a trebuchet to chuck the criminals into the black holes.

I was watching a program on Discovery about Steven Hawking. Damn interesting that when his peers were polled he wasn't even in the top twenty most influential physicists. Dude did some pretty valuable work in the late seventies or early eighties, and now he is old news. "What have you done for me lately?" I guess...

Hell if I can understand all the math those guys do...I don't even know what all those damn characters represent.

Now that's some interesting stuff. They could connect universes or to other parts of the same universe. Now that raises the question if they DO connect to differnet universes what would be the effect of a collapse of just one? would it cause a cascade effect that would destroy the other universes? or would it just be localized to the one and just sever the tie?

Now also think for a moment the possiblity of extraterrestrial life existing in the other universes with the ability to travel back and forth. There's just so many possibilities.

And what if the "other" universes are based on anti-matter instead of matter? Would we cause a massive explosion by sending matter there?
