A monster is loose in my area of the country. A man is abducting young teens. He stalks them as they are walking to the bus stop. He pulls up in his car and asks for directions. The kids step up to the car and he either talks them into a ride to school, or asks them to reach into his car and grabs them. They never make it to school. He tried to grab a boy, but the boy was smart enough not to reach into the car and the man drove off. Last night I was watching TV when an Amber Alert came over the screen. A 14 year old girl was taken at 7:30 in the morning on her way to school. I have two 14 year old girls! I sat my kids down this morning and had a talk with them about this situation. I reminded them again to always walk together and NEVER walk up to a strange car and NEVER EVER accept a ride from someone that Mom and I don't know. As I explained to them, I am truly sorry that they have to live in a world like this one. When I was a kid we would take off at 8:00 in the morning and not be back until diner. It's sad that our kids can't have that same freedom.
Talk to your kids about their safety. Explain why your rules are important. Kids never think that things like this can happen to them or in their town. Go to http://www.familywatchdog.us/ and show them that these people are all around. When I read the map of my area, I have an offender home in my development. Never stop talking to them about safety. They are not in danger when they are by your side, they are in danger when they forget what you've taught them. Keep your kids safe and I hope none of you ever go through having one of your children abducted.
Don't forget to tell them every day how much you love them even when you are mad at them!
