Is there anyone that has seen the movie, and played the game to a point where they can explain to me what the fuck was going on..?

I've seen the movie and played the first game and I couldn't tell you what the fuck what is going on.

I played the original PS1 game and finished it. Still haven't worked out what was going on and lost the interest to work it out. Haven't bothered touching any of the sequels and haven't see the movie b/c I didn't think it would be worth wasting 1+ hours of my life.
