[REQ] Proxy Server

... There are a number of sites blocked for me when I am at work, but for the last few years, I've been able to access them without fail through an acquaintance's proxy. otto.melkior.biz This worked great since my work's firewalls block all the major known proxy services. It constantly missed this one since it was a private service and not a public anonymizer.
Today, it stopped working – not because of my work's filters, but something done on the server where ‘otto’ was hosted (or so it appears). Anyway, the guy that provided it has been mia for most of the year, having dropped off of all of his usual forums (including those where he was an admin.) so I haven’t been able to contact him. I would love to have access to a good proxy again (reliable and not blocked) and wondered if anyone here with a server (or access to one) would consider hosting / creating one just for me.... :)

I believe “otto” likely referred to the pHttP proxy known as otto-0.9.1. but honestly, I don’t know how that differs from a php proxy. (there is one out there called dean).
The software to create them can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=52440

Anyone willing to create and host one for me? …Or do you know of a good one that I can use?

I think WAY has one, or can make one for you...I'll move this to the tech section so he can be sure to see it...

Probably my next paycheck..!

If I like it, in a year or so we'll probably be neighbors...I ordered some material from the City of Ausin website so that I can have some places to visit when I get there...

http://mediati.org/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.cgi for all your proxy needs.

If you're after something a bit better than a lame HTTP proxy, try Tor - http://tor.eff.org/
Probably one of the best anonymisation applications out there. Uses a different remote host each time you access a server, so it's fairly difficult (read: almost impossible) to get blocked. The only downside is sometimes, depending on which node route you take, you might get worse pings than you normally would.

Hey thanks Way, the 1st one seems to work well enough for now. I couldn't get to the second site - it's blocked... lol

The first one seems to work fine for your average site... but as soon as i try a secure one like playboy, I can't seem to get past the login..... any suggestions?

Hmm, a secure proxy is a bit of an oxymoron, as the entire point of a SSL layer is to make sure that you are connected directly to the machine you are navigating to and vice versa...

But if there is a will, there's a WAY...Maybe he can cook something up using AF's SSL layer to get there, but I know Playboy does a tricky thing with cookies and SSL, so it may not even be worth the trouble...
