He hinted at a possible run for the White House on CNN's Larry King last week, but Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert made it official Tuesday night: he's jumping into the presidential race in his home state of South Carolina.

"After nearly 15 minutes of soul-searching, I have heard the call….I am hereby declaring that I will enter the presidential primary in my native South Carolina, running as a favorite son," Colbert said on his show Tuesday night. "I defy any other candidate to pander more to the people of South Carolina — those beautiful, beautiful people."

South Carolina is one of four lead-off primary states that will likely play a crucial role in determining the eventual nominee of both parties.

On Larry King last Thursday, Colbert laid out his potential electoral strategy, saying he'd see how he did in South Carolina before deciding to move on to other states.

"I think maybe there's something I could offer the campaign on a state-by-state basis," he said. "I would target a state individually…a test run."

Colbert, author of the recently released “I Am America (And So Can You!),” also told King he'd seek to run as both a Democrat and Republican.

"I'd let the people decide what party I belong in," he said. "I don't dictate the people's actions."

In the interview with King, Colbert also brushed aside suggestions that it was a "cop out" to run in both parties, calling it instead courageous, because, "I could lose twice."

In the slim chance that he wins a party's nomination, Colbert said Tuesday he'd consider either Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, Russian President Vladimir Putin, or himself for a running mate.

"Colbert-Colbert — that's a strong ticket," he argued.

I would never vote for Stephen Colbert but i do fully support him running as a candidate for president of his party ..why?

First... like many great people of opinion , but even more so , he is committed to truthiness and nothing but truthiness when ever possible. If this fails he may resort to avoiding the issue but this is just a tool to protect the truthiness and i think that speaks to his integrity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truthiness

Second......His firm belief in the two party system. As a self described republocrat he can seek out the most popular positions on any issue. This is why he is the strongest candidate and truly a man of the people ....who are in the majority

Third.....His snappy in your face come back to atheists....“If God doesn’t exist, then who’s bowling when it thunders? ″ Check. Mate.

Fourth......His common sense response to the doomsday alarmists when they say we could lose a large number of species due to climate changes. " Do we really need all of them?. Some of them are very similar. Do we really need a lion.....and a tiger?. Do we need an alligator....and a crocodile?”

And finally his well rounded thoughts on the immigration problem from Mexico
There’s a new trend out there, and it’s tonight’s Wørd: Southsourcing. Last June, the Department of Homeland Security pledged to crack down on businesses that hire workers with suspicious Social Security Numbers. [¡537-00-7702!] This hit farmers hard, since farmers rely on migrant laborers to pick their fruit. [Juanny Appleseed] Now, luckily, someone figured out where to find an endless supply of Mexican workers who aren’t facing deportation: Mexico! [Map of Mexico] Large agro-businesses in California are renting farmlands south of the border. As many as 11,000 laborers are working for new US-owned farms in Mexico, growing food down there that will be sold and consumed up here. [Montezuma’s Economic Revenge] Folks, this is great for business. Instead of paying workers 9 dollars an hour here, they can pay them 11 dollars a day there. [Sounds Less Cruel In Pesos] And, remember, these are non-union jobs, so you don’t have to give them benefits. [401-Que?] Or, for that matter - you also do not have to give them weekends off. Adios, Sábado Gigante! [Hola, Sábado Pequeño] And, adios immigration problem. [And Lou Dobbs’ Reason To Live] Now folks, we just need to take this idea a little further. For instance, a lot of illegal immigrants are working in the U.S. construction industry. We can make those workers legal by moving all our housing construction to Mexico too. [Mi Casa, Su Country] Now sure, it’s possible that the Americans buying those houses might be hesitant to move to Mexico and live in them, but once they realize that we’d also have to move all our restaurants, laundry, gas station, supermarkets, country clubs and big box stores down there to make those workers legal, Mexico will start looking a more – a lot more like home. [Home Depot] Now granted, there may be some impact on our economy, but if we end up in a recession, and employment becomes scarce, American workers can always pull up stakes and go where the jobs are: Mexico. [Map of Mexico] I just hope they don’t put up a border fence.
