AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Film director Paul Verhoeven has written a book that contradicts the Bible by suggesting that Jesus might have been fathered by a Roman soldier who raped Mary.

An Amsterdam publishing house says it will publish the book titled "Jesus of Nazareth: A Realistic Portrait" in September.

Verhoeven is best known as the director of films including "Basic Instinct" and "RoboCop," but he is also a member of the "Jesus Seminar," a group that questions church teachings about Jesus.

John Dominic Crossan, a Jesus Seminar founder, says that while Verhoeven is a member in good standing, there is little evidence for the view that Jesus was illegitimate.

Crossan says the claim was first reported in a polemic written in the second century to refute the Christian belief that Jesus was born of a virgin.

Film Director Paul Verhoeven is a f@#king moron. Celcius wrote that whole thing about Panthera, but it has long been refuted. Arguments that it is all fiction hold up better than Celcius, who is a huge fan of deductive reasoning with no proof. Ironically, the only way his works were rescued from total destruction was Origen, who sought to record as much opposition the church for the sake of the church, so the same arguments might not keep popping up, with no way to address them.

Yes, the record of the trial (Acts of Pilate, a showing of the trial's findings and work so controversial that it is not even standard Apocrypha) states that Jeshua is a child of adultry with a Roman Soldier. Most believe it is Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera whose grave was found in Germany, but it does not specifically mention rape (that is about 15 years old I think, before that they just tried to defile Mary). Also, that testimony was given by the same Jews, who according to the Bible, sought to break every bone in Jesus arms and legs. "Jeshua ben Panthera" was used by some early Christians, anyways. The Catholic Church made the "immaculate conception" a definitive point of proof of faith. Jeshua never required any such profession, nor did the Ebionites, or any other early Christian Sect.

The real issue is the whole story is an embellishment, told from several viewpoint which were at the fringe, or had specific motive. Court reporting was not a by rote transcript like it is now. It was full of lying, slandering, and even the court scribe had to make sure things sounded good when they were read back to Ceasar, and that they dare not impune upon his absolute authority.

We will NEVER know what, if anything happened, and that is not the point. The point is what you believe happened, and why, and how that affects your current life and decisions. For me, this story, as well as others are not one bit likely to cause a shift in my faith or belief, no more than Catholic doctrine and the redacted book that emerges from the Nicean council.

It would be great if one person could resolve the whole centuries of conflict with a single (prolly derivative and textbook provacative) documentary. But the caution I offer is no true Seeker will give you the answers, instead they will give you their assumptions, their findings, and a courage to set out on your own to see what you can find. Still, if someone wants to find out more, I recommend the "Jesus Dynasty", or Mythmaker, which is a big criticism of Paul, the father of the Protestant faith.
