How do you make vidcaps

What do you use to make vidcaps like MPC would make under Windows in Linux? Something that will run under Fedora 9/Gnome or if not then Ubuntu 8.0.4.

Thanks for the links but I don't think that they are what I am looking for.
I took a quick look at the links and it appears that these show you how to make a video of what is happening on your screen (say to make a tutorial). What I want is to create a series of stills from a video in one image.

I use Ubuntu. I'm pretty sure vlc allows for automated screenshots. When I get some time I'll install it and give it a whirl.
